Flames could be seen emerging from the top portion of the brick residence. The burning home at 1 Central Green, which has a slate roof, has been providing its own fair share of challenges for those fighting the fire. The late-summer heat and the roof, itself (slate is notoriously difficult to traverse and ventilate), have made an already difficult task more arduous. Early reports indicate the fire started in the home??????s attic. Mutual firefighting aide has been called in from at least the following neighboring towns: Medford, Reading, Arlington, Stoneham and Woburn. Air conditioned my steam-heated house “ We called Unique because we saw their ads explaining that they could install air conditioning in older houses like ours, that don't have air ducts because they have steam heat. They installed two air handlers, one in our attic and one in the basement, and we have the condensers outside. They were able to snake small diameter round ducts through our walls, and we have small round air outlets in the floor on the first floor and in the upstairs ceilings. The system is thus in 2 zones with 2 thermostats. It works wonderfully. We are a perfect temperature in even the hottest, most humid weather and the systems are quiet. They obviously know their business, and their technicians are polite and efficient as well. I do recommend them, but it is important to know that this is not an inexpensive thing to do! ”
