Nelson Moak spent his formative years being educated in France, having attended high school at Verdun France. He attended undergraduate school at Northwestern State University, where he earned his BA degree with a double major in Economics and Political Science, and a minor in American History. He re-chartered the Young Republican Club while attending Northwestern State University, where he served as its President for 2 years.

He joined the Army during the Vietnam War and served as a Chemical, Biological and Radiological Warfare specialist, with numerous assignments among which are, United States Military Academy, West Point and the National War College in Washington D.C.

After the War, he attended Law School at Louisiana State University Law Center, earning his Juris Doctor degree in 1969, and was elected President of the Young Republican Club there for a semester.
