Far too many of us only call on a plumber in emergency situations, and this is unfortunate, because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and this is especially true when it comes to plumbing maintenance.

Billy Gafford, manager of Handyman Connection based in Birmingham, Alabama, and a craftsman with expertise in all areas of home improvement, explains what steps we can take to prevent plumbing emergencies.

Too many of us only call on a plumber in emergencies, and this is unfortunate, because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and this is especially true when it comes to plumbing maintenance.

Properly maintaining your residential and commercial plumbing system can not only help you prevent and prepare for emergency situations , such as an overflows, clogs and water heater problems, but it will also save you money in the long run. Properly maintained plumbing systems don’t need to be repaired or replaced as often, and you’ll also save any money you would have spent on emergency plumbing services, which can be considerably more expensive after regular business hours or on weekends.

After all, not all plumbing emergencies are going to occur during business hours, and if you call a plumber to your home at 3 a.m. on a Saturday, you can be sure the final cost is going to be significantly more than the cost of regularly scheduled personal or professional maintenance would have been.

Here are a few things you can do on your own to prolong the life of your plumbing system and prevent emergencies:

Find out the locations of your gas and water shutoff valves. In most homes, the water shutoff valve will be in the basement or outside by the hose faucet in the front of your house. You can identify the water shutoff valve by the pipe leading to it from the ground and the water meter that is attached to it from the other end. If you turn off your water, be sure to also turn off your water heater by turning off its electric or gas power supply. Not doing so can damage the heating element in your water heater or harm someone who turns on a faucet during this period.Your gas shutoff valve will likely be located next to your gas meter. In addition, most major appliances that use gas will have an individual shutoff valve. In the case of a gas leak, this information might save your life. Gas leaks can be deadly, so if you smell gas, immediately evacuate the premises and call your gas company. Avoid flipping switches, using appliances or anything else that could cause a spark.

To maximize your water heater’s performance and lifespan, set its thermostat at 115 to 120 degrees F. This will also help you save a buck on heating costs and prevent scalding accidents.

If you plan on leaving your home for an extended period of time, drain your plumbing system by first turning off the water shutoff valve then draining faucets at the lowest and highest points in your home. It’s especially important to clear out your plumbing system in cold temperatures; water expands in cold, and this can burst plumbing pipes. So, don’t forget to drain your pool, spa and sprinkler system as well.

DIY plumbing tips for annual maintenance:

Do a spot check for leaks around the house at least once a year. If you ever notice a leaking faucet or pipe, get it looked at before it has the potential to get worse and even cause water damage or mildew.

Septic tanks are one focal point of plumbing emergencies, and they are especially susceptible to problems such as overflow and mechanical malfunctions during severe storms. Have your tank checked out by a professional periodically to be sure it’s operating at an optimal level. In addition, you may want to have a water- or battery-powered back up sump pump installed for emergency situations.

Test the water pressure of your shower heads and faucets for low pressure, which can indicate a build up of sediment in your plumbing system or a faulty water line.

Your water heater also builds up sediment, which interferes with its optimal operation and can also cause corrosion. You can clear the sediment yourself by draining several gallons of water from your heater through a faucet that will be near the bottom of the tank. Ideally, this should be done several times a year, not just once.

Now I know that plumbing system maintenance isn’t an exciting topic, but it’s a crucial precautionary measure every homeowner should take, and I sincerely wish it doesn’t take a plumbing emergency for anyone to realize that.

A few ways that homeowners and other professional plumbers and leak specialists can use to stay safe.

Plumbing often is relatively simple, especially if all you need to do is tighten a fixture or apply a little plumbing putty. Even so, plumbing sometimes brings with it a few hazards that need to be avoided. American Leak Detection is a plumbing and leak detection company with over 30 years of service and millions of satisfied customers. The owner of the Tampa, Florida, branch of the company, Steven Nagel, personally has 10 years experience in the plumbing field. He says there are a few ways that homeowners and other professional plumbers and leak specialists can use to stay safe.

Control and prepare for wet surfaces. Nagel recommends that homeowners and those in the plumbing industry first prepare themselves for the wet surfaces that almost always are encountered during plumbing. One of the easiest ways to do this is to get a good pair of waterproof shoes or boots you can use while on the job. Comfortable footwear with rubber soles that have good traction greatly reduces the risk that you will slip on any water that ends up on the floor. In the rare instance that a plumbing problem coincides with an electrical short, rubber-soled footwear also reduces the odds of electrocution.

Know how to shut off the water in your home. Although plumbing gets water on the floor in most cases, Nagel says you can reduce a cleanup headache by knowing how to turn off the water in your home. There are two ways to do this. First, shut the valve that is closest to the source of the leak by turning it clockwise by hand or with pliers. (For toilets and faucets, the valves typically are right underneath the fixture and are usually chrome or plastic.) If the plumbing problem involves multiple fixtures, then it is better to turn off the water to the entire home. The main shutoff valve usually is located where the cold water pipe enters the house and may have a red handle.

Equip yourself with some basic protective gear. Since plumbers often use tools that may be sharp (such as a hacksaw) or which contain chemical agents, another tip that Nagel gives is to wear gloves and safety goggles. The gloves should be a good fit so that you still can grip pipe and tools well. Goggles should be able to go over glasses if you wear them but shouldn’t be so tight that they press into your skin. These items will prevent cuts, and irritated skin and eyes. A face mask also is a good idea since it will keep you from inhaling residues, dust, and chemical fumes.

Do what you can to avoid physical stress. Nagel says that plumbing can cause injuries if a person doesn’t realize how their body works and its limitations. Nagel says that you never should lift extremely heavy tools or parts by yourself—always get a buddy to help you and lift using your legs to prevent back injury. Try not to twist into awkward positions, and stretch often to avoid cramping if you have to keep bending over. Never work through pain.

Be aware of wiring and electrical components near your piping project or leak. Some plumbing projects require that you go through flooring or a wall in order to get to a leaking pipe. Unfortunately, pipes aren’t the only thing that goes through walls and floors—electrical wires also do. If you see that electrical wiring is close to the pipes on which you need to work and aren’t absolutely positive of how to turn off the electricity to your home, do NOT attempt to finish the job yourself. Call in professional plumbers like those at American Leak Detection who are more familiar with how to handle the situation, or call in an experienced electrician to show you how to stay safe while you work. Always swallow your pride when it comes to electricity and plumbing safety.

Anyone interested in plumbing first has to decide whether or not they want to become a registered contractor or a certified contractor.

Plumbing can be an extremely profitable business, especially when you consider that plumbing is essential to being able to cook, clean, and practice good hygiene. It can be just the field for someone who has a basic understanding of mechanics and who likes to work with their hands. Becoming a plumber in the state of Florida is not difficult, but plumbers do need to meet specific requirements.

Steven Nagel, owner of the Tampa branch of American Leak Detection, has nearly 10 years experience assisting plumbing and pool leak customers. He says that anyone interested in plumbing first has to decide whether or not they want to become a registered contractor or a certified contractor. A registered contractor has passed a local competency examination on plumbing. Registered contractors can work throughout the locale in which the test is given. A good way to prepare to be a registered contractor is to apprentice with someone who already is certified or licensed; this will give you the experience to be able to pass the competency test. You also can take courses on plumbing to learn what is needed. Once you have become a registered contractor, you can go on to become a certified contractor. Certified contractors need to pass a competency test like registered contractors, but they are able to do jobs throughout the entire state of Florida once they pass the exam.

Once you have your registration or certification, you will be required to continue your education in the plumbing field. You have to complete a minimum of 14 hours in order to renew your contractor’s license. Within those hours, you have to have 1 hour each of classes that deal with safety, worker’s compensation, business practices, laws and regulations, and Florida building codes. If you hold both a registration and a certification, you don’t need to take the courses more than once; you can double count the courses for both certifications. Since renewals happen every two years, you’ll need to take the 14 hours of education within two years so that they can be applied at the next renewal.

Nagel says that you’ll need to have a little money in the bank to become licensed, since renewals and continuing courses have fees attached. However, most courses at universities aren’t more than a few hundred dollars per credit hour, and the renewal fee is only $209. This means that staying in business is relatively inexpensive in the plumbing industry compared to other fields that require far more continuing education credits. In some instances, just a few jobs can more than cover the cost of education and renewal.

Those who are interested in plumbing should know what they’ll get out of the registration, certification, continuing education, and license renewal fees before they start out. Plumbing contractors are allowed to do plumbing installation, design, alteration, repairs, and maintenance. They can work on a variety of systems, including sanitation pipes, venting systems, public or private water systems, septic tanks, supply wells, swimming pools, and irrigations.

Nagel says that specialties are an option in the plumbing field. For instance, you may decide that you want to work only on pools and spas, or you may want to concentrate just on working with a certain type of plumbing technology. If this is the case, then you can take courses and exams necessary to get certified or licensed in your specialty area. Specializing doesn’t mean that you can no longer do plumbing work outside of your specialty—your original plumbing registration or certification still will apply as long as it is kept current with continuing education and biennial license renewal. Specializing just means that you won’t get the same variety in your plumbing jobs as other contractors.

Nagel recommends that those who might want to get into the plumbing industry first do some job shadowing in order to find out if the job is the right fit. In job shadowing, you follow a person (in this case a plumbing contractor) around and watch him perform his daily work tasks while he’s on the job. He may allow you to assist in some cases, but most of the time job shadowing is strictly just observation of the job. That way you’ll know right away whether you want to go through the steps to becoming and staying a plumbing contractor. Contact a plumbing company like American Leak Detection to find out if you can shadow someone.

Top 15 terms to know.

If you are thinking about having some work done on your pipes, or if you’ve discovered a leak that needs servicing, you can’t get to first base without knowing some basic plumbing terminology. If you go into a store looking for equipment, for example, then you’ll need to be able to tell the sales clerk what items you need. If you call in a professional, then you’ll be a little lost as they explain what needs to be purchased and done if you don’t know their commonly-used acronyms, tools, and products.

Steven Nagal is the owner of the Tampa branch of one of the premiere companies in the leak detection and plumbing industry, American Leak Detection. Nagal says that, although there are plenty of plumbing terms used by professionals, homeowners should be fairly well-equipped if they can learn 15 basic terms, many of which are acronymns. The 15 terms Nagel considers most important are as follows:

ABS: This stands for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene. ABS is a tough, black, plastic pipe that’s used in drain lines.

Adapter: This is a fitting that can bring two pipes of different sizes or types together.

Cleanout: When you need to remove an obstruction in a drainpipe or trap, this is a handy section of pipe. It’s part of a normal plumbing system. A fitting that allows two similar pieces of pipe to fit together.

CPVC: This stands for Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride. Where local plumbing codes permit it, this is a hard plastic pipe that can be used in water-supply systems. It often is used in place of copper pipes.

Elbow: Also called an “ell” or “L,” an elbow is a pipe fitting that has two openings, always at divergent angles, up to 90 degrees.

Fixture: A fixture is anything that allows a supply of water in or out. Good examples are sinks and toilets.

IPB: This stands for Polybutylene, a plastic type of tubing permitted for use in some water systems around the country.

Plumber’s Putty: Plumber’s putty is a substance that is soft, like putty, that is used to form seals around joints and the bases of fixtures.

PVC: This stands for Polyvinyl Chloride. It is an white or off-white plastic pipe used in things such as residential sprinkler systems.

Reducer: A fitting that connects one pipe to another that is smaller in size.

Rough-in: Basic plumbing installation phase that includes vent and waste lines, water and drains.

Run: The entire length of pipe from a fixture to a drain.

Solder: (Pronounced “sodder.”) A metal alloy melted to mend or fasten one surface to another. It’s also used to describe the action of using solder, such as: “He will solder one part to another.”

Tee: A pipe fitting in the shape of the letter T with three openings.

Trap: Part of a fixture’s drain line that holds water and prevents sewer gasses from coming into a home.

Knowing these terms isn’t going to get you a shiny gold star from a salesman or plumber, but they’ll at least show that you have a basic understanding of the materials and equipment used during the repair or renovation process. In the long run, this will reduce the odds that you will get taken in by someone who wants to sell you something you don’t need, and it will ensure that you get what you want for your plumbing job.

The more complicated your plumbing repair or renovation is, the more familiar you’ll need to be with additional terms not on Nagel’s list. Thus, if you want to know more than these basic terms, specialists such as those at American Leak Detection are happy to educate you, or you can check your local library and websites for additional information.

Whether you are in a house that’s half a century old or one that barely has had time for the paint to dry, leaks in plumbing probably will spring up at one time or another.

Whether you are in a house that’s half a century old or one that barely has had time for the paint to dry, leaks in plumbing probably will spring up at one time or another. When they do, you can put uneasy feelings about whether you are dealing with a dime-a-dozen job or the mother of all repairs to rest by educating yourself about the most common residential leaks.

American Leak Detection, founded in 1974, is experienced in fixing residential leaks, as they have had over 30 years in business. Steven Nagel, owner of the Tampa, Florida branch, explains that pool leaks are one of the most familiar repair requests he gets from customers. The good news is that if you do happen to have a pool leak, statistically speaking, you’re far more likely to have a leak that is structural—only 10% of pool leaks are related to plumbing and need major repairs. The 90% of leaks that are structural usually require only minor fixes but result in major water savings.

Nagel reports that in houses, leaks are likely to be under a slab, in the walls, or in the yard. Slab leaks can be some of the most costly to fix if taking care of the leak means doing an entire repipe of the plumbing system, since the plumbing underneath slabs often is so closely tied into the housing foundation. If the problem involves only a simple repair, however, leak specialists such as those at American Leak Detection can use modern techniques and equipment to ensure that only a small portion of the slab is removed to minimize damage. Wall leaks can be problematic because they can cause mold to grow on wood and insulation, but most wall leaks can be accessed without too much trouble. Yard leaks occur in the outdoor hose fixtures and in sprinkler systems, so these should be checked periodically when you do your yard work.

The type of pipe used in a residential piping can affect whether a leak is likely to occur. “Plumbing leaks tend to be in copper pipes,” says Nagel. “Whether due to the age ([leaks in copper appear] usually in the 20- to 30-year range), lime from a cement block eating through the pipe, or general wear and tear, the most common plumbing leaks are pinhole size and found in copper pipes. CPVC (a type of piping) rarely leaks, but it is most commonly caused by pressure on the pipe fittings when it does.”

Some fixtures have parts that cause leaks when they malfunction. For example, toilets, faucets and appliances most commonly leak due to wear and tear on the rubber pieces used. These are incredibly simple fixes in most cases, and are inexpensive due to the fact that you don’t really need to replace any major parts such as the pipe or fixture itself.

Nothing is wrong with trying to fix one of these common leaks yourself if you know how. If you aren’t sure what to do, however, then the first step is to figure out where the water is coming from. If you can see the leak, then go ahead and call a plumber. If you know water is intruding from somewhere but just can’t seem to locate the leak, then call a leak detector instead. The leak detector can tell you where the problem is so that the plumber can fix it. Often one company may provide both plumbing and leak detection services, such as American Leak Detection does, so you might be able to simplify the repair work by using specialists from the same company.

Steps to determine a slab leak.

Hundreds of homeowners have homes that have concrete foundations and flooring. Plumbing often is laid underneath the concrete slab. So if a leak occurs within these pipes, the leak is coined a slab leak. Leaks can be caused by the pH level of your water, shifts in the foundation of the house, or water pressure problems. The cost and serious damage related to a slab leak necessitate that you find them quickly, which means familiarizing yourself with slab leak symptoms.

American Leak Detection is a premiere company in the plumbing and leak detection industry. Steven Nagel, owner of American Leak Detection Tampa branch, has specialized in home and pool leaks for nearly 10 years. He says there are 5 main symptoms of a slab leak. These include:

The sound of running water when no water should be running.

A hot spot on the floor (possible hot water line leak)

Cracks in walls or floors

Mildew or excessive moisture under carpets

High water bills

Although the first and last slab leak symptoms can indicate problems in piping elsewhere in the home, in conjunction with the other symptoms, they are more likely to point to a slab leak. If you are having these symptoms, you then need to think about how much water you’re losing, how the leak can be located, and how it can be repaired. Nagel answers frequent questions on these topics:

How much water am I losing?

The meter test is an easy way to determine if your plumbing system is leaking. To do this test, write down the number on your water meter when all of your water is turned off. Wait 30 minutes and then check the meter again. If there is a leak, the meter number will be different from the one you wrote down, and it will give you a rough idea of how much water is being lost in a specific period of time.

If you hear your water running when it shouldn’t, you will also have a high water bill. Most water companies bill you by the number of gallons used within the billing cycle, so you can compare your suspect bill with previous bills in order to confirm the amount of water lost.

How can I find the slab leak?

Breaking into a slab or pool deck without positive confirmation of a leak location is unacceptable. Don’t let anyone dismantle your property just to search for leaks. Finding a slab leak requires a thorough process with technical expertise, as well as experience.

Locating slab leaks non-destructively requires the use of modern tools such as electronic amplification equipment and electromagnetic pipeline locators. With the proper equipment, slab leaks can be found and repaired with minimal disruption to property. In many cases, only a single floor tile needs to be removed and replaced.

American Leak Detection’s highly trained technicians use their own noninvasive leak detection equipment to locate the leak accurately so they save you time and money, and prevent unnecessary property damage.

What are my slab leak repair options?

Once the leak has been located under the slab, a specialist will provide repair options. These options can include the following:

Spot repair: The specialist may open the slab at the spot of the leak and repair the leaking pipe. This option is cost-effective for newer construction.

Repipe or Reroute: The specialist will replace the entire line that is leaking. This is most effective for older plumbing systems that have a history of leaking.

In-place pipe coating: If a series of small leaks in the plumbing system would make it cost prohibitive or too inconvenient to dig up the slab, then in-place epoxy pipe coating could be the best option.

How can I be prepared when requesting a slab leak detection service?

Before you call a technician to fix the slab leak, figure out how much water you are losing by doing the water meter test. Be able to give a reason why you suspect a slab leak (such as hot spots on the floor), and know the number of sinks, toilets, and showers in the home. The more you know about your plumbing system before the specialist comes on a house call, the better off you will be.

You notice it absently; it’s faint at first. Then it gets stronger, that unmistakable odor of waste from a septic system. You pray it’s your neighbor’s problem rather than yours, but then you notice that your drains don’t seem to be draining like they used to drain, and finally you see the telltale backup of water in the back of the lawn. This scenario could happen to you, but it doesn’t need to. All you need to do is treat your septic tank correctly.

How Septic Tanks Work

A septic tank really does not do any water treatment; it sorts the waste that flows from the drains of the house into the tank. In the tank, heavier material sinks to the bottom, creating sludge, while the lighter materials stay on the top. A special outlet called a sanitary tee lets the liquids pass out of the tank while the tank retains the solids. When the liquids pass out of the tank, the soil in the surrounding area is what purifies the water. This is why it’s so important to maintain septic tanks and to install them properly. Without good treatment, the liquids that pass from the tank cannot be filtered by the soil and problems such as groundwater contamination can occur.

Cleansers

Many cleansing and rejuvenation products are available for septic tanks. However, according to a paper by the North Carolina Extension Service, none of these cleansing products are needed. They are not required because, no matter how clean the tank is, the solids eventually will need to be pumped anyway. Homeowners also are cautioned against these products because they can contain ingredients that kill microorganisms that actually do filter the tank water in the drainfield and which can contaminate groundwater. In fact, in some areas, these products are prohibited. The real way to treat a septic system thus is to concentrate on what is flushed into it through the drains and to maintain the drainfield.

Pumping

Pumping the septic tank removes the solid waste material from the bottom of the tank. Doing this keeps the solids from finding their way into the drainfield and blocking the passage of the tank water. If such blockage occurs, then the wastewater has nowhere to go and backs up into the drains, resulting in foul odors permeating through the entire house. If the septic design is such that the water doesn’t back into the drains, it still can accumulate over the drainfield (this is the classic septic puddle often seen by septic treatment specialists when they come to work on a tank). Pump based on the size of your tank and the number of occupants in the house. The smaller the tank or the more people in the house, the more often you will need to pump.

Water Usage

A septic drainfield is only so large; thus it can filter only a certain amount of water over a given period. According to InspectAPedia.com, an online building and environmental inspection resource, when a household uses too much water, the drainfield can become waterlogged. With nowhere else to go, any additional water may back up into the drains. Water conservation thus can help with tank performance. Additionally, avoid having water from other sources (such as gutters) flow onto the drainfield. This ensures that the drainfield can take on more water from the tank rather than the other sources.

What Not to Put Down the Drain

Certain items should not be put into a septic system because they increase the amount of solid waste that builds up in tank or clog the pores in the soil of the drainfield. Examples include grease from cooking, as well as large amounts of food put into the garbage disposal. The more solids in the tank, the more often you will need to pump, and the greater the likelihood of clogging the drainfield. As you go about your household cleaning, limit the number of chemical agents you use and go natural if you can. Remember that any chemicals put down the drain end up in the tank and therefore have the potential to kill good bacteria or to contaminate nearby water sources.

Ska-wish, ska-wish, ska-wish. Splash, ska-wish. Ah, yes. The sound of the plunger being used yet again. Drain clogs make this sound common, but it’s one that’s preventable. If you understand how drains work and how clogs form and are removed, then you can keep your drains clog free.

Stop the Hairballs

Hair is one of the biggest components of drain clogs, especially in the bathtub or shower drain. It can form clogs when Uncle Joe routinely taps out his razor trimmings into the sink instead of the trash, or it can happen just from the everyday shedding that occurs when we rinse out our shampoo. Once the hair is in the drain, it builds up wherever there is a bend in the piping or where other buildup can catch it. The easiest solution to this is to buy a drain catch or plug. These products fit right into or over the top of the drain to stop hair from going into the pipe. Plastic catches aren’t as durable, though they don’t rust the way metal ones can. These are great options for people who don’t like to treat their drains chemically.

Use the Disposal—Wisely

Garbage disposals can do wonders to get rid of those last little bits of chicken parmesan that stuck to our plates. Still, they aren’t designed to chop through rocks. (Don’t laugh. Even things like aquarium gravel have been put in disposals.) Unfortunately, people treat them as though they are, and as a result, items find their way into the drain that never should. The consequence is often a nasty clog. If the item you want to put down the disposal drain isn’t biodegradable, don’t put it in, and don’t use the disposal for pieces of food that are larger than a finger.

Contain the Grease

A lot of people put the grease down the drain and then rinse out the sink with the disposal running. This is one of the worst things a person can do for their drain, because according to Lowe’s, a home improvement store chain, the grease sticks to the piping and whatever buildup may already be in the pipes. This sticky mess makes it harder for other debris put down the drain later on to flow on by, and clogs form. Put the grease in a reusable container instead and dispose of it properly when the container is full.

Look Ahead, Not Back

An unfortunate reality about drain care is that most people don’t pay attention to the performance of their drains until there is a problem. They react to backed up water, foul odors, or leaks, but they don’t do much when the drain is flowing well. This can spell catastrophe with clogs, because by the time a clog is serious enough to cause problems, it can be hard to dissolve or remove. Instead of reacting to a clog in a reactionary way with drain clog products, react in a preventative way and use the products once a month to prevent build up from forming. The makers of one of the best drain products, Liquid Plumbr, actually recommend this to keep drains flowing. If you don’t like using chemicals, a natural recipe for drain cleaning is to pour baking soda down the drain, let it sit for a while, and then chase the baking soda with some vinegar. The chemical reaction that occurs bubbles away grime and buildup, and the acidic vinegar disinfects and can eat through material that could cause a clog. Additionally, the baking soda removes odors.

Inspect

An easy way to prevent clogs is to inspect the drains routinely. Once a week, go through the house and run water through the drain. See if the water is flowing right out of the basin or tub or if it is held up before draining. Listen for “blurps” as the water drains—these can be a sign that a clog is causing air pockets to form and then pop. Lastly, take a whiff of the drain. Foul odors can be a sign that something has been trapped in the piping and is starting to decay.

A water cooler in your home or office ensures that cool, fresh water is readily available, and will encourage your family or employees to drink more.

Why a Water Cooler Is Perfect For Your Business

Dehydration affects performance. Our bodies require water in order to function. When adequate water is not available, the performance of our bodies and brains begins to decline. Becoming even slightly dehydrated can cause symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, inability to concentrate, dry skin, and aching muscles. Experts say we should consume approximately eight glasses of water each day in order to avoid dehydration. Unfortunately, the coffee and tea that so many of us enjoy actually contribute to dehydration. A water cooler in your home or office ensures that cool, fresh water is readily available, and will encourage your family or employees to drink more.

Plumbed in water coolers don't require bottles or service contracts.

A water cooler delivers cold water at the touch of a button. Some units even include a heating element to provide instant steaming-hot water for soups or hot drinks. No more waiting at the sink for the tap water to cool off or waiting in line at the microwave—your family members or employees enjoy the convenience of instant access to the water they need any time of the day.

A plumbed-in water cooler will never run dry. Unlike most freestanding water coolers, plumbed-in units do not require bottles or service agreements. Once your unit has been installed, there is no need to worry about when to re-order or how much water has been used. Because the water cooler will utilize water from your existing cold water line, you are spared the expense of bottled water and will have a continuous supply of drinking water.

Why a Commercial Plumber May Be Right For Your Business

Contracting with the right commercial plumber will ensure that you have access to installation, replacement, repair and service whenever needed. A commercial plumber will be able to handle problems related to your gas lines, water lines, drains, grease trap, water heater, plumbing fixtures, septic tank, and commercial roof drains. For a new construction project, a commercial plumbing company will work with your contractor to design and build a plumbing system for the new building. For existing buildings, your commercial plumbing team will also be able to advise you on plumbing upgrades that can help you to reduce your operating costs, such as upgrading to lower-flow faucets or more efficient toilets.

Your commercial plumber can also offer plumbing and gas-line inspections and preventive maintenance. Using visual inspection and state-of-the-art leak detection methods such as static, audio and video, your plumber will be able to catch and remedy potential problems before they require a major repair. And a scheduled maintenance program will help to ensure that your plumbing system lasts as long as possible.

A commercial plumbing contract will likely also include 24-hour emergency service, an amenity that can come in handy when a serious situation develops overnight. Since even a small plumbing issue can rapidly become a big problem, it is important to have access to repair services any time of day.
