All about cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Thomas Liszka is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has specialized in cosmetic plastic surgery for more than 15 years. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the nation’s leading cosmetic surgery organization. He runs his own practice, Ballantyne Plastic Surgery, in Charlotte, North Carolina, and talks here about everything from tummy tucks to treating sagging buttocks…

Types of Laser Skin Resurfacing

Looking younger and fresher is the goal of most invasive and non-invasive cosmetic procedures, and laser skin resurfacing is no different. This form of mainly facial skin rejuvenation can make you look refreshed, but it is not always the best method to deal with those pesky crow’s feet.

Non-Surgical Skin Care Methods

Look no further if you desire to look younger with little downtime but are not too concerned if the results are only temporary. Many people prefer non-invasive methods, but they have to face facts: Surgery lasts a lot longer, and requires almost no touchups.

What is Body Contour Surgery?

There are many types of body contour surgery, or cosmetic surgery from the face down. If you fancy a bit of a breast reduction or augmentation, a tummy tuck or even some liposuction on your thighs, then this is it.

Breast Lifts and Breast Augmentations

Few people are aware of the fact that having bigger, fuller breasts through surgery often means a combination of a breast lift and implants. If you have one without the other, the result might not be exactly how you intended.

How to Correct Uneven Breasts

It’s a sad fact of life that many women suffer from asymmetry in their breasts. Sometimes this is hardly noticeable; sometimes it is apparent. If you want to correct the look of your breasts so that they appear to be almost exactly the same size and shape, surgery might be the answer.

Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Any woman who desires bigger, fuller breasts is a good candidate for this type of cosmetic operation, which can give you the bust you have always dreamed of relatively quickly. The recovery period can take a while and it can be painful, but most women say the results are well worth it.

Types of Tummy Tucks

Mini and traditional tummy tucks are the two main types of tummy tucks performed today. You would need to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to see which one is best for you.

Pros and Cons of Liposuction

Shifting fat from localized areas where it stubbornly refuses to budge is the most common reason why people want to have liposuction. But does it really work? This articles looks into the advantages and disadvantages of this popular procedure.

Why to Get Thermage

A plastic surgery procedure that promises to smooth and tone your skin? You have got to be kidding! Well, no, actually. This FDA-approved procedure seems to really work, although there is less predictability with it than there is with surgery.

Treating Sagging Buttocks

A body lift is usually the best way to lift a droopy buttock, although there are other options. However, buttock implants are not recommended as they are made from silicone rubber – and can be incredibly uncomfortable.

How to Choose the Right Facelift

Having a long consultation with your plastic surgeon is usually considered the best way to choose the type of facelift that is right for you. After all, your face could look dramatically different for years, so take the time to know what you want.

Recovering From a Facelift

It will take about seven to 10 days to recover from a facelift after you have the procedure done. After that, the swelling and bruising will have almost subsided, and women at least can choose to use make-up to conceal any tell-tale marks.

Why to Get a Browlift

Any time a person tells you that you look sad, angry or incensed when you’re not, it could have something to do with your brow. Brows begin to sag with age, which is why people get them lifted in an attempt to appear younger and more refreshed – and less tired.

Benefits of Cheek Implants

When a woman looks at a model smiling beatifically from the pages of her favorite fashion magazine, chances are she has high cheekbones. So it’s no surprise that scores of gals are flocking to their local surgeon to mimic the look. The procedure is not as difficult as you might think.

All About Chin Implants

For decades, a weak chin in men has been taken as a sign of a weak character. If you have a weak chin, or think that your chin simply does not do justice to the rest of your face, cosmetic surgery might be the answer to your problems.

Ear Pinning in Children

Few people are aware of the fact that our ears have almost reached their adult size by the time we are age five or six. But as the cartilage is still soft, that can be a prime time for an ear-pinning operation, especially if your child is already being teased about their size.

Best Candidates for a Nose Job

People who have what is called a dorsal hump are usually the best candidates for nose jobs, as they are relatively easy to fix. Still, going to your surgeon for a consultation is always the best way, no matter what size or shape your nose it. It’s amazing what a competent plastic surgeon can do these days.

Facial Cosmetic Surgery for Men

More and more men these days are appealing to plastic surgeons to help them look younger. For a lot of men, it’s all tied in with their job, especially if they are in sales. They want the competitive advantage, and think that looking younger will do the trick.

What is Septal Surgery?

Septal surgery is done to alleviate breathing problems, although in many cases when a person has this surgery done, he cosmetic surgery performed on his nose as well. Read more to find out why.

Problems With Plastic Surgery Abroad

It might sound significantly cheaper, a lot more glamorous and a bit more fun, but having plastic surgery carried out abroad is not the recommended way to go. And if you relished the idea of recovering in some exotic foreign climate, think again.

Septal surgery may sound a bit gruesome but it can come as a great relief to people who have suffered from breathing difficulties for years

Some types of nose jobs are not done for cosmetic reasons. Septal surgery is a procedure carried out to alleviate breathing problems. Dr. Thomas Liszka of Ballantyne Plastic Surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina, talks here about what is involved in this operation, which involves reshaping or moving cartilage in the nose, or removing the turbinate bone.

Septal surgery is done usually to alleviate breathing obstruction. Sometimes setpal surgery is necessary to straighten the nose, when it is crooked or has a fracture. Septal surgery is also frequently done at the time of cosmetic rhinoplasty, although it is rarely done for cosmetic reasons alone.

The septum is a thin piece of cartilage and bone in the middle of the nose. In some people, it bends too much one way or the other into one or both sides of the nose, causing an obstruction. This can be the result of an injury, or simply because it grew that way on its own.

Different Procedures

A variety of septal procedures that can be done based on the problem, depending on the problem that the patient has. If the septum is warped or curved the cartilage can be removed. Sometimes the cartilage itself is scoured to make it move a specific way. It can be combined with other intra-nasal procedures for obstruction, namely the removal of the turbinate bone.

The operation only takes about 40 minutes and the recovery period is not that onerous, although if you blow your nose for about a week afterwards, it can start to bleed. Your nose will feel tender and it will be blocked for up to two weeks, although special sprays can help alleviate this.

It is recommended that you take about two weeks off following the operation, and that you avoid from playing any contact sports where your nose could be knocked for at least a month. Experiencing sensitivity on your nose for a while afterward is common.

Septal surgery may sound a bit gruesome but it can come as a great relief to people who have suffered from breathing difficulties for years. And if you do choose to combine it with cosmetic rhinoplasty, it can be a winning combination.

You have to be careful if the surgeon tells you that you cannot do what you ask him or her to do. If you don’t listen, you will have problems after the surgery.

Not everyone who has a nose job comes away with the perfect nose they desire. Dr. Thomas Liszka runs Ballantyne Plastic Surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina, and talks here about why in about 10% to 15% of cases people who have nose jobs walk away dissatisfied with the result.

A rhinoplasty can reshape the nose and allow better facial harmony by reducing a nasal hump, augment a depression at the bridge of the nose, refine or lift the tip, make a broad nose more narrow, straighten a crooked nose, or narrow nostril width if the base of the nostrils are too wide.

At Ballantyne Plastic Surgery, we correct these issues to whatever degree you desire to allow you to achieve a natural-looking result and maintain your appearance. And the best candidate for any kind of plastic surgery, including a nose job, is someone who has realistic expectations.

Saying that, the best candidate for a nose job – meaning the person who will have the best results – is someone who has a dorsal hump and wants it straightened. More difficult nose jobs are those that deal with the nasal tip. Patients with thinner skin on the tip have better results, as it shows the architecture of the cartilage better.

People who have thick nasal tip skin, usually those of Mediterranean or African origin, tend to have less ability to have high definition of the tip. We also sometimes augment the nose, actually adding volume to it. That happens less often, perhaps with a patient of Asian descent who has a flatter bridge to the nose, for example.

Realistic Expectations

One thing unusually about rhinoplasty, unlike any other type of plastic surgery, is that the risk of not getting it how the patient wants is 10% to 15%, due to the nature of the cartilage and bone sin the nose. You can sometimes make it better but that will involve a re-operation.

Again, that’s where the most important thing is to have good expectations. You have to be careful if the surgeon tells you that you cannot do what you ask him or her to do. If you don’t listen, you will have problems after the surgery.

Final Results Can Take a Year

Rhinoplasty requires a 7- to 10-day recovery period and no exercise for a minimum of two weeks. Swelling on the tip can take up to a year to go away and allow you to see the final results. It’s all subtle but it can take about a year nonetheless. Rhinoplasty also can be performed with septal surgery for breathing difficulties or with other facial cosmetic procedures.

Many women – and some men – resort to regular injections of Botox to get rid of creases in their foreheads. The reason: they believe that having a lined forehead ages them, making them look as if they had indulged in a few actual thoughts or had some real experiences during their lifetimes.

You will not be a candidate for a brow lift if you are too young (!), smoke, regularly take anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirins, or drink a lot of alcohol.

Occasionally, however, the injections of the Botulinum toxin aren’t enough. They can be pricey and they have to be topped up fairly regularly – in some cases as often as every three to four months – in order to work properly and smooth out those lines. After several years of regular Botox sessions, the price can add up.

The alternative to having poison injected into your forehead is a brow lift, which is a permanent way of getting the forehead you desire. There are many different types of forehead, or brow lifts, depending on the specific needs, wants and desired outcome of the patient. If done correctly, a brow lift can revolutionize the way an individual – or at least their forehead – looks, and make the need for Botox a thing of the past.

However, no type of brow lift is without risks. Before you embark on this type of cosmetic surgery – or any cosmetic surgery – make sure you know what you are getting into. Botox will wear off within a few months, and you’ll look exactly as you did before having the injections. A brow lift, on the other hand, can change the way you look forever – which could be a good thing, but could be downright disastrous.

Types of Forehead Lifts

Brow lifts are designed to smooth out the forehead and lift the line of the eyebrows, while making the eyes appear more open and refreshed and thus the entire face look rejuvenated. Also known as an eyebrow, endobrow, open brow, temporal or forehead lift, it is usually done on people age 40 or above, as younger folk don’t have enough saggy skin available at the top of their hairline, or crown.

The three main types of brow lifts are:

Traditional or Classic Brow Lift. Not for the squeamish. Your surgeon will make a “coronal incision”, or big cut, behind your hair line from ear to ear on top of your forehead. After this is done he or she will tighten muscles and get rid of any tissue or skin that is responsible for frown lines or other wrinkles. The skin will then be pulled back tight to reduce those wrinkles and/or frown lines, then sewn back. Basically, it’s like cutting off some skin, giving it a yank, then re-sewing it tightly back up. Sometimes the result is that the person appears to have a slightly larger forehead than they had bargained for.

Endoscopic Lift. These types of lifts are more popular because they require a shorter recovery period and are less invasive. However, they an only be performed on patients who need less of a lift, which usually means younger people. They involve the use of a camera on an endoscope, or cannula, which will allow the surgeon to see what he or she is doing without making large incisions. Instead, smaller incisions are made, and the skin is pulled through them. Twilight anesthesia is usually used.

Mini-Forehead Lift. The beauty part is that having a mini-forehead lift can cost about the same as two – three years of regular Botox injections, but the result can be permanent. The goal of this less-invasive lift is to elevate the eyebrows, thus making the eyes appear less hooded and making the need for an eyebrow lift a thing of the past. It is achieved by incisions usually made behind the frontal hairline. If you have a high forehead then the hairline can be brought down – with an endoscopic lift the hairline will be made even higher.

Please note that brow lifts are often done in conjunction with other plastic surgery procedures, such as an eyebrow lift, hair transplant or even a face lift or nose job. After all, people reckon, one-stop shopping is the way to go: if you are paying for anesthesia and perhaps even a hospital stay, why stick with only the forehead? Also, you might look a bit funny if you have the forehead of a 20-year-old, while the rest of your face appears 65-plus.

It’s an age-old story. Men and women desperate to look younger/better/sexier but who lack the funds – or intelligence – to insist on quality treatment get taken in by bogus scams, bogus products and even bogus physicians. You get what you pay for – or do you?

Bogus Treatments and Products

<img class="size-full wp-image-2000" title="priscilla-presley1" src="http://local.yodle.com/articles/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/priscilla-presley1.jpg" alt="Beauty queen and former Elvis love Priscilla Presley, now 62, famously made headlines when she visited a doctor who injected her with “low-grade silicon” he had smuggled into the US. It is thought the silicon was fabricated to grease auto parts, not plump up aging women's faces.

The latest hype about the latest trendy product makes news headlines, and those in the know want to be first. However, they are also often the first to discover that the treatments don’t really work, or that the small benefit they get is not worth the hefty price tag. Here are a few that have either extremely temporary benefits, or none at all…

Oxygen Facial. Can putting a bit of oxygen on your face really make your skin look fresh, younger and rejuvenated? Well, Hollywood actresses jumping on the oxygen facial bandwagon say yes; scientists say no. There is no real evidence that squirting atomized moisturizers, or those infused with oxygen, can have any beneficial effects whatsoever – except on the wallet of the person doing the squirting!

Seaweed Wraps. Supposedly they can help you get rid of excess poundage by drawing out impurities from your body and helping with fluid retention. The ocean slime is wrapped around your body and your skin is detoxified as the mineral-rich seaweed draws out fluid from our cells. So you may lose some water, but will quickly put it back on. Might was well just not drink anything for a few days!

Tua Viso Non Surgical Facelift. This facial exerciser works with a 9-volt battery to exercise the face so you don’t have to, much like an abdominizer supposedly does to your tummy. But it has little scientific evidence to back it up, and many who have tried it say it does nothing.

Rodial Bum Lift. A topical cream that promises an “instant fix” to make your bum look smaller, including reducing 32 percent of cellulite and altering the appearance of wrinkles. But results are temporary, and you need “at least six treatments” for anything more permanent. So why is it advertised as being “instant”?

Smooth Away hair remover. Kind of like sandpaper to buff away unwanted hair and make skin soft and smooth. Unfortunately, feels like sandpaper too – and leaves most of the hair right where it was. Also can make skin feel rough and sore.

Placenta facial. At around $450 a treatment this doesn’t come cheap, but the well-heeled are flocking to have placentas smeared all over their faces. They reckon that if a placenta can nourish a baby in utero, it can nourish them in a beautician’s chair. But while soothing cream applied expertly may make your face look and feel soft and smooth, it’s hardly worth the price tag. And where do those little placentas come from anyway?

Bogus Substances
Sometimes what you think you are getting is not what you are getting. If you have any substance injected into your skin, keep in mind that any type of dermal or other fillers come in specially labeled tubes, with stickers that peel off and are placed into your chart once injected. And check the practitioner’s – and the facility’s – license before you allow them perform any type of procedure on you whatsoever. Here are some horror stories….

Dr Gayle Rothenburg of Houston told patients they were receiving injections of Botox when they actually were injected with a generic product she had picked up at some medical seminar. She was charged with 14 counts, including misbranding a drug. The reason: it was cheaper than actual Botox so could maker her rich – or land her in jail.

Several women in Fresno, California were disfigured when they had bogus collagen injected into their skin. One was left with an unsightly permanent lump on her forehead. It is thought that she probably was injected with industrial-grade silicon.

Beauty queen and former Elvis love Priscilla Presley, now 62, famously made headlines when she visited a doctor who injected her with “low-grade silicon” he had smuggled into the US. It is thought the silicon was fabricated to grease auto parts, not plump up aging women’s faces.

Bogus Doctors
Perhaps even more worrying than a bogus substance being injected into your system is having a bogus plastic surgeon cut up your body. If you are considering having any type of plastic or cosmetic surgery carried out, make sure you use only a fully licensed physician – and don’t be embarrassed to check their credentials in writing. Here’s what happened to some who didn’t…

A Massachusetts woman evidently decided to save some cash and have a nose job and liposuction carried out by a non-licensed plastic surgeon. The clue to his status should have been obvious when he started performing the surgery on a massage table in the living room of his condo. Unfortunately, the patient didn’t live to tell the tale herself.

A man in Barcelona, Spain couldn’t afford to purchase the tools he needed to perform cosmetic surgery on unwitting patients – so he used veterinary tools instead. The bogus 63-year-old “surgeon” was performing boob jobs and butt implants, and worked in the same room as his pets: three dogs, a parrot and a cat.

Gabriela Sanchez, 41, developed such a severe infection after visiting a cut-rate plastic surgeon in Mexico for a boob job that she had to have the implants surgically removed – and now has no breasts at all.

If you want to make yourself look or feel better, always invest in a tried-and-tested product that has a shining reputation and spotless safety record behind it. Beware of quick fixes, products that make outlandish claims, and amazingly cut-priced items – they’re probably cheap for a reason.

And never skimp when it comes to your health, especially as far as having surgery is concerned. Check out a surgeon’s qualifications beforehand and make sure they are 100 percent legitimate before letting them loose on your face and/or body. Who knows – you may even live to regret it!

It's estimated that the grooming market for men is worth more than $3.5 billion these days, with more and more members of the male species going under the knife for cosmetic reasons. In one survey...

Women are not the only vain creatures these days – more and more men are resorting to plastic surgery in a bid to enhance their looks, albeit through artificial and painful means. But while some men are choosing to go under the knife for purely personal or aesthetic reasons, others are taking the leap because they believe it will enhance their career professionally – and make them a more powerful – or at least more attractive – force to be reckoned with.

The sad fact is, men want the same things that women want: to look younger, fitter and thinner, with regular, even features and a healthy glow. They are starting to realize that in today’s competitive market, looking tired and haggard with droopy eyelids, dark circles and a weak chin just won’t cut it. And if they have big boobs and a flabby belly to boot – well, forget about becoming a vice president in the firm, let alone the CEO.

It’s estimated that the grooming market for men is worth more than $3.5 billion these days, with more and more members of the male species going under the knife for cosmetic reasons. In one survey of people of the male persuasion carried out by – not surprisingly – a plastic surgeon, it was found that:

Four percent believed that their level of physical attractiveness would affect their success on the job, and make them feel more powerful

42 percent believed that their career would be made better if they could just improve one tiny thing about their face

32 percent thought that looking younger would affect their job performance more positively

Plastic Fantastic

Here is a list of the most popular plastic procedures for men, in no particular order:

Gynecomastia, or Male Breast Reduction. It’s estimated that about 15 percent of all men are unhappy with the size of their breasts, and now some are finally doing something about it. Men develop man boobs, or moobs, for a variety of reasons, including hormonal changes, steroid abuse and being drastically overweight. Surgery to get rid of them sometimes involves a full operation, while on some occasions means utilizing the latest in liposuction combined with laser surgery.

Eyelid Surgery. Also known as blepharoplasty for men, this procedure can be purely cosmetic, functional or both. It seeks to correct both sagging upper eyelids, as well as puffy bags underneath the eyes. Usually performed under just local anesthesia, it trims away excess fat, muscle and skin, with the remaining bits reattached in a way that makes the eye area appear younger and more refreshed. The result: tighter, more taut eyelids and smoother under-eye areas.

Pectoral Enhancement. Men who have tried everything but still have a chicken chest are now relying on pectoral implants to give them the bosoms they have always dreamed of. If no amount of exercise and diet has made your chest appear less than concave, your surgeon can insert implants made of silicone directly underneath the chest muscle to make the area appear more filled out. Requires general anesthesia and an overnight hospital stay – much like a boob job (ED: what’s the difference then?).

Nose Job, aka Rhinoplasty. Carried out using a local or general anesthetic, depending on what needs to be done and personal preference, this is an out-patient procedure which can greatly affect a person’s looks. Costs will vary but the vast majority of men who opt for this op say it’s money well spent. Men can have rhinoplasty from the age of 15, girls from age 13 (that is when their nose stops growing, evidently!).

Liposuction. This method of weight loss involves using a cannula to literally suck the fat from your body. In men, problem areas are usually the breasts, love handles, tummy, thighs and neck. Tiny incisions are made so the vast majority of folk, if not all, will not even know you’ve had the procedure done. Some men even have it done on their backs…

Hair Transplants. Many guys believe that nothing makes them look less virile than a lack of hair. Male pattern baldness affects a great many men, so if you can’t stand your head resembling a ping pong ball, this could be the treatment of choice. It’s fairly simple: your surgeon will take “donor” hair from the sides or back of your scalp, then surgically insert them in the bald patches, where it will hopefully start to grow. Then again, you could just buy a tasteful hat…

Chin and Jawline Augmentation Surgery. Nothing spells out weakness more in a man than having a weak chin – or so proponents of chin surgery would have us believe. As as a strong chin and jawline are considered signs of a “real” man, many men seek to correct theirs when they fall flat (or rounded, flabby and soft). Surgery consists of various types of chin implants which make your jaw more angled and square.

Penis Extension Surgery. If slicing through the penile ligament sounds appealing, this is the operation for you. This operation, also known as phalloplasty or male enhancement surgery, doesn’t actually make your member more massive, it just makes it dangle lower. You may prefer a different – and considerably more invasive – procedure where fat from another part of your body is injected into your Johnson to increase its girth. Yowee!

Non-Invasive Cosmetic Treatments for Men

Apart from full-on surgery, men are also investing in less invasive cosmetic operations to look better. It’s estimated that about one-seventh of all Botox anti-wrinkle injections are done on men, and guys are also jumping on the injectable filler band-wagon, to smooth out wrinkle lines and plump up lips. In fact, the American Academy of Facial and Plastic Surgery reckons that between 2000 and 2007 there was 91 percent increase in the number of men non-surgical facial enhancements.

Men make up 20 percent of all laser hair removal procedures as well, according to statistics. They are getting to grips with unwanted hair in other ways as well, with male waxing salons becoming more and more popular to make chests, buttocks and backs sleek and smooth. Pretty hands and feet are no longer a woman-only domain either: the number of male manicures and pedicures are on the rise, among men of all sexual orientations, and hair salons for men are often a lot more than the simple barbershop of Andy Griffith’s day.

If you fancy a spot of plastic surgery, it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman – what matters is that you have realistic expectations and find a qualified, Board-certified surgeon in whom you have complete trust. But if you expect that changing your appearance will drastically change your life, think again. Beauty is only skin deep; in the long run, the oomph behind the facade is usually more important.

Having difficulty adjusting to those unforgiving signs of aging? Finding it hard to keep your makeup from running in the creases? Hate that bump on the bridge of your nose? Wish you looked like a girl in your bikini instead of the boy next door? Feeling good about the weight you’ve lost, but hate the sagging skin? Think you would be promoted if you didn’t have that double chin? Tired of hearing people ask you if you store acorns in your cheeks?

Most people have one or two things they would change about their physical appearance if they could. Would you, if you could? There seem to be two camps of opinion on plastic surgery: the “don’t-mess-with-mother-nature” side and the “if-its-broken-fix-it group.”

Studies have shown that people with receding chins are perceived by others as weak, those with sagging eyes are thought to be tired and individuals with hooked noses are described as being untrustworthy. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, is it any wonder that those on the receiving end of misconceptions like these might struggle with self-esteem issues and want to level the playing field by correcting their physical appearance?

Like it or not, right or wrong, the reality is we live in a world obsessed by physical appearance. Even though you can’t fix a troubled marriage with bigger boobs or goof off at your job and expect a promotion because you had a nose job, self-esteem issues affect self-confidence which in turn influences nearly everything you do. In a world that worships at the altar of self-improvement, “be all that you can be” and “just do it” are phrases that resonate through to the world of plastic surgery.

If you are considering having plastic surgery, there are some things you should know before beginning a self-improvement campaign. First, surgery of any kind should never be taken lightly. Second, to make an informed decision you need to arm yourself with information.

What Do You Know About the Field of Plastic Surgery?

The field of plastic surgery is divided into two areas: reconstructive and cosmetic. Some physicians specialize in one area or the other; some straddle both fields to varying degrees. Both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery can improve physical appearance and enhance self-esteem, but there are differences.

Reconstructive Surgery – Generally speaking, reconstructive surgery improves the function and or the physical appearance of abnormal body structures. In some cases, a new body part, such as a missing ear, is created to achieve a more desirable appearance. Candidates for reconstructive surgery may have congenital or developmental abnormalities or deformities caused by disease and trauma. An example of a congenital anomaly (also referred to as a birth defect) that commonly requires surgical repair is a cleft lip. Trauma victims may require surgery for everything from minor scar revisions to extensive facial reconstruction. Generally speaking, reconstructive surgery is covered by most health insurance companies, although you should always check first to prevent unwanted surprises.

Cosmetic Surgery – Cosmetic surgery aims at reshaping existing body parts like redefining a nose or removing fat from buttocks or knees. Cosmetic surgeons also perform non-surgical procedures like injecting fillers to plump up thin lips or the cosmetic material BOTOX® to reduce frown lines and wrinkles. They also offer various skin rejuvenation services such as skin resurfacing, thermage (a non-surgical technology that utilizes radio-frequency energy to promote collagen deposition and skin tightening) and laser and light based therapies aimed at addressing problem areas in the superficial layer of the skin. Cosmetic procedures are considered elective and generally are not covered by most health insurers.

2008 Cosmetic Surgery Statistics

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), an organization restricted to physicians who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a leader in cosmetic surgery research, offers the following surgical statistics for 2008:

Over ten million cosmetic procedures, both surgical and non surgical, were reportedly performed in the United States. Of the total, 17% were surgical events.

The most common procedures were: breast augmentation (355,671), liposuction (341,144), eyelid surgery (195,104), rhinoplasty or surgery on the nose (152,434) and abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck (147,392).

The majority of cosmetic procedures (surgical and non-surgical) or a whopping 92% were performed on women.

Among women, the most popular surgical procedures (in order from most requested to least requested) were: breast augmentation (enlargement), liposuction (removal of fat), eyelid surgery, tummy tuck and breast reduction.

For men, the top surgical procedures (in order from most requested to least requested) were: liposuction, rhinoplasty (surgery on the nose), eyelid surgery, breast reduction for enlarged male breasts, and hair transplantation.

Percent of total procedures by age group:
35-50 yrs. – 45%
51-64 yrs. – 26%
19-34 yrs. – 22%
65 and over – 6%

Fees for Cosmetic & Reconstructive Procedures

Fees for surgical and non surgical procedures vary according to the type of procedure requested and the surgeon involved.

Procedure – The type of procedure you require determines the other elements that will be included in your total fee. Elements that may be included in a bill are: local or general anesthesia fee; assisting technician fee; anesthesiologist fee; surgical center or hospital fee; recovery facility (office surgical center or hospital) fee; charges for drugs, pre-and post-operative lab tests and x-rays; cost of facial or breast implants and so on.

Surgeon – Fees charged by surgeons are not standardized. Physicians in demand because of their expertise, reputation and years of experience tend to charge more per procedure than less seasoned surgeons. Another factor affecting the fee charged by a physician is the level of technical difficulty involved in performing the surgery and the time required to complete the job.

Given the wide range of fees, if you want to know what your surgery will cost, you will need to have a frank discussion with your surgeon. When you do, remember to inquire about all of the fees, not just the physician’s fee. Ask for an estimate in writing before you leave the office.

You should also check with your health insurer to determine if your planned surgery is covered by your policy, but a word of warning: Do so only after you discuss your procedure with your physician. Why? Because some procedures like eyelid surgery, ordinarily considered elective, might be covered if eyelid skin folds obstruct peripheral vision.

Locating the Right Plastic Surgeon

Choosing to have any surgery is a major decision, but once you decide to pursue the possibility, you will need to select a surgeon. Look for a surgeon who is skilled in his work and willing to discuss, in as much detail as you require, everything involved in the procedure you are considering. With cosmetic surgery, aesthetic outcome is highly important. Unlike an appendectomy, your goal is to look better not just survive.

The best advertisement for a plastic surgeon is a satisfied patient so ask around. If you are somewhat secretive and don’t want people to know that you asking for yourself, you can always say that a friend asked you for a recommendation. If you cannot elicit a name from your friends or acquaintances, use the Internet or phone book and pay attention to ads in newspapers and local magazines.

Once you have a name, the next step is to check out the surgeon’s credentials. Do it before you make an appointment because most surgeons charge a fee for an initial consultation. To waste your money on a fee only to discover after the fact that the desired credentials are lacking is pointless. Call the doctor’s office, indicate that you are considering surgery and ask the office receptionist the following questions:

Is the surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

How many years of experience does he/she have?

Is the doctor a member of other professional associations and if so, which ones?

Does the doctor have past patients to whom you could speak?

All of this information should be free. Write down the information you receive and check out online the member requirements of the professional associations named. Make an appointment only after you are satisfied that your own criteria is met.

How to Prepare for your Appointment

Spend as much time as necessary researching the kind of surgery you think you want or need. For example, if you know you want your nose corrected, gather as much information as you can about the procedure and make a list of questions or topics relative to the surgery that you want to discuss with your surgeon. Put “ask about credentials and experience” on your list along with “ask about fees and financing options.” If you have other concerns, write them down too—leave nothing to chance.

What to Expect in the Doctor’s Office

The day has come and you are on your way to the surgeon’s office for your initial consultation with your trusty list of questions in hand. When your name is called, you finally meet the surgeon and quickly discover that he has a few questions of his own.

The first question is, “Why are you here?” followed closely by questions aimed at eliciting your expectations of the surgery. Surgeons are, or should be, understandably worried about patients who expect plastic surgery to cure all that ails them. An improved appearance is one thing, an improved life quite another. Expect some probing on this subject. The surgeon is looking for psychological balance and realistic expectations.

What else can you anticipate on your first visit? The surgeon will examine you, ask about any medical conditions or problems that you have, ascertain what medications and/or supplements you take, ask if you smoke and what your alcohol intake is, review your past surgeries and inquire about your family’s medical history. There may be other questions pertinent to the type of procedure you are seeking such as size desired in a breast reduction or enlargement.

Once you and your physician agree on a particular surgery your surgeon should explain the procedure to you in as much detail as you require including pre-operative and post-operative care, likely outcomes of the surgery and any risks or potential complications that may arise. Together you will decide on such things as location of incisions, size and types of any implants that may be required and anesthesia type, general or local. Now is the time to ask about length of stay, healing time, scar minimization, swelling and what if the surgical results are unsatisfactory? Will your surgeon redo the surgery at no charge? Always ask to see before-and- after photos of the doctor’s own surgical work. This is standard practice.

Some physicians use computer programs that can predict, in a picture, how you will look with your new surgery completed. To use this program, your picture is taken and transferred directly to the computer application. The surgeon then manipulates your picture on the computer screen to demonstrate to you how you will look after a facelift, breast implant, chin implant, eyelid surgery, tummy tuck, etc.

Before you leave the doctor’s office, you will be given a date for your surgery and instructions for preoperative preparation and postoperative care. If new questions arise between your first visit and your surgery, don’t hesitate to call the office for the answers or ask to speak to the surgeon.

You may be satisfied with the first surgeon you interview, but if not, repeat the process until you find the surgeon you want. This is not the time to take anything for granted and it is the time to be selective. If you care enough about yourself to want plastic surgery, you owe it to yourself to look for the surgeon who will give you the best result.

Rhinoplasty, or in a more common term, ‘a nose job’, is an ancient plastic surgery technique that has been used on men and women for over two thousand years. People, for whatever reason, have found the need to re-shape their nose since the ancient Indian, Sushruta, pioneered plastic surgery around 500 BC. In his day, the need was a little more dramatic than our modern-day ones: his patients had their noses cut off as a means of punishment for various crimes!

Did Ashlee Simpson get a nose job? You decide.

Today’s patients can have nose jobs just for cosmetic reasons and do so by the millions each year. I had a rhinoplasty done on me many years ago because of breathing problems and the main things I remember about the whole experience was that breathing and bleeding are two very important functions of the body.

Breathing is something we all take for granted, I suppose, and it never occurred to me before the operation that when we eat we still breathe, Now, when both nostrils are suddenly blocked with surgical plugs to stem the bleeding, breathing whilst eating becomes a thing of the past and all one’s senses are set to survival. The first time I tried to swallow a drink after the op, I just couldn’t do it! My normal functions shut down and I was faced with a problem I at first had no idea how to solve. If I swallow, will I choke?

Since I was rather fond of living, I felt somewhat reluctant to jeopardize my tenuous hold on life just for a measly drink of juice. But in time, and a great thirst, I took my courage in my hands – for want of a better expression – and ventured a wee sip. Much to my surprise, and my glee, I did not expire; but all efforts to feed myself thereafter, or take a drink were still filled with trepidation.

We are never told about this basic need before the operation, or at least I wasn’t, and I suggest you practice this by pinching your nose whilst eating or drinking just to see how difficult it is. Please don’t die while you do this or I shall be very angry.

The other body function – bleeding – is a bit more problematic, but can still cause you to leave this earth prematurely, if you do not take precautions. In my operation, so many years ago now, it was the practise to remain in hospital for a week or so before checking out and going home. These days, I believe they allow you to go home either on the same day as the op, or the next day.

The problem with this is that if you have nostril plugs inserted and, for whatever reason they become dislodged (either by curiosity, or by accident) you can expect a raging torrent of blood – your blood! – to come gushing down your chest, or breast. First of all, don’t wear white! Now, if this doesn’t send you into a panic, or make you collapse in a heap on the bedroom floor, dash to the fridge and get lots of ice to place on your nose. Make a snowman/woman/person of yourself whilst in the supine position and wait for the bleeding to stop, or for you to expire, whichever comes first.

Next, that is if you haven’t shuffled off this mortal coil by now, get out the cleaning equipment and clean up the bloody mess; splattered red is bound to clash with the curtains. Or, better still, get yourself back to hospital for an instant check up, and maybe a blood transfusion, too.

Plastic surgery is not commonly associated with kids, but recent years have seen a rise in the number of teenagers opting for cosmetic operations that were once exclusive to adults. Sometimes the reason kids undergo plastic surgery is entirely understandable, such as when a child is injured in an accident, but other times the question becomes more complex when the purpose of the surgery becomes purely cosmetic. So what kind of operations are appropriate for the young, and how do you decide whether it can wait until adulthood?

Norman Rockwell | Girl at the Mirror

These are just a few of the question’s we’ll explore with this guide to the good, the bad and the ugly of plastic surgery for kids.

High School Surgical

High school can be a tough time during a teenager’s life as they try to discover who they are while still trying to fit in and make friends. This makes the question of cosmetic surgery a tough one – on the one hand, you want to teach a child to be happy with who they are but sometimes certain pronounced facial features can make a teenager feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. For instance, acne scars, nose bumps and “dumbo” ears are all sources of anxiety for many teens that can be relatively easy to fix with cosmetic surgery.

In these cases, deciding on whether or not the operation is necessary depends on how adamantly the teen feels about it. Something like acne scars can be unsightly and embarrassing for a teenager and if it has been causing a good deal of anxiety, it’s completely understandable that they may want to try cosmetic surgery. However, other procedures such as liposuction are not only unsafe, but also undermine values such as eating healthy and exercising.

So before deciding on a procedure, it is important to be certain that your child isn’t compromising values for vanity.

Talking to your Teen

To make sure that your teenager is mature enough for cosmetic surgery, it’s important to open up communication about the subject. Make sure your teenager knows the potential risks, has realistic expectations and is doing it for the right reasons. Sometimes kids feel pressured to ask for cosmetic surgery because of teasing or insults instead of actually feeling the change is necessary. Make sure that this is something the teen sincerely wants for his or herself.

Similarly, making sure that the teen is realistic about what to expect for the results can prevent disappointment and depression. Teenagers can sometimes work up unrealistic expectations about how they will look post-operation. Talking to your teen about expectations before the operation will allow them to weigh the potential outcome with the risks of the surgery which will contribute to a much more informed decision.

While it’s important to always have open communication with your child, it is doubly so when considering a surgical procedure.

Common Procedures

Listed below are some of the most common cosmetic procedures for those under 18.

Rhinoplasty – Rhinoplasty involves any reshaping of the nose. The most common rhinoplasty is dorsal bone reduction, the straightening out of bumps on the nose. Though some people reshape the nose in other ways, such as reducing nostril width, most other procedures should wait until the child is over the age of 18 because of safety concerns, and most doctors won’t perform any rhinoplasty until a teen is at least 16.

Ostoplasty – This procedure involves pinning back extended ears, sometimes referred to as “dumbo” ears. And because this surgery is considered very safe and simple, children as young as 5 have been known to get it. Like rhinoplasty, it’s one of the most common cosmetic surgeries for youngsters and is fairly controversy-free.

Scar revision surgery – Though no scar can be eliminated completely, scar revision surgery can make them much less noticeable. In teenagers with severe acne, scarring can occur both by depressing the skin and thickening raised tissue. Because some of this scarring can become quite unsightly, scar revision surgery remains a viable option for teenagers who wish to reduce the damage caused by severe acne.

Breast asymmetry correction - This surgery is meant to correct assymetry in breast size, such as if one breast is larger than the other. The operation involves either reducing the size of one breast or enlarging the other. It is important to note that this is not breast enhancement, as you must be at least 18 years of age for most kinds of breast augmentation. However, in certain cases where there is a noticeable disproportionality in breast size, it can be a completely legitimate procedure to get.

Gynecomastia – Gynecomastia is a fairly common procedure for overweight teenage boys that involves reducing overly large male breasts. The enlargement of the male breast occurs due to abnormally large mammary glands in male teens. Though the problem is exacerbated by obesity, gynecomastia can occur in average size teens as well, though it is usually less severe.

Conclusion

Making that final decision to get cosmetic surgery for an adolescent is a complex issue and before jumping to a conclusion one should always consult with a doctor. But most importantly, the boy or girl receiving the surgery needs to be mature and knowledgable about the subject. Plastic surgery is not something to rush into – it should be carefully weighed by the parent, doctor and teenager together so that the final decision is an informed decision.

Although the bizarre moniker “twilight surgery” has eerie ramifications of Rod Serling’s popular Twilight Zone television program of yesteryear, it actually is becoming an increasingly popular way to undergo some cosmetic procedures – without the administration of general anesthesia.

It might sound scary or perhaps even a little bit shocking, but in reality the benefits of twilight surgery are numerous. In fact, if you think you can handle the idea of a plastic surgeon cutting off part of your face, manipulating the bones in your nose or shaving off some ear cartilage while you’re wide awake, this could be the surgery for you.

Why Twilight Surgery?

Twilight surgery, which originated in the United States but is now becoming popular virtually worldwide, is carried out while patients are awake, although they are put under heavy sedation before going under the knife. In some cases patients wake up having no recollection of the procedure; in others, they remember every nip, cut and tuck.

How it works is simple. Instead of administering a general anesthetic, the surgeon uses a local one along with a sedative, one that makes the patient feel comfortably drowsy and relaxed. This allows him or her to talk during the surgery, in some cases, and actually move and be responsive to the surgeon when required.

Also known as twilight sleep, conscious sedation or monitored sedation, twilight surgery is not for the squeamish, even though both the local anaesthesia and sedative are administered by a qualified anesthesiologist. The latter may include nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or intravenous medications, and for patients who do not want to run the risk of general anesthesia, the benefits are obvious.

General anesthesia can be dangerous for certain people, such as heavy smokers, those who are dangerously overweight or those with certain medical conditions. Often patients worry that they will be put under and never wake up. When it comes to elective surgery, which plastic surgery more often than not is, twilight surgery can take away a considerable risk.

Local anesthesia as opposed to a general is beneficial for other reasons as well. For procedures such as a facelift, twilight surgery will allow patients to smile, laugh and frown during the course of the operation, so that the surgeon can check the movement of facial or wrinkles and, ultimately, achieve better results. With liposuction, the surgeon can ask the patient to stand up so her or she can access the result of their handiwork once gravity has taken its toll. This would not be possible under heavier sedation.

Types of Twilight Surgery

As far as plastic surgery is concerned, the consensus is mixed. Most surgeons would agree that facelifts, tummy tucks, eye lifts, ear pinning and nose jobs, also known as a rhinoplasty, can be carried out advantageously as twilight surgery. Others say that invasive procedures such as a breast enlargement operation can also have good results, while others believe it’s unsafe.

The decision, ultimately, is up to you and your surgeon – but make sure you only use one accredited by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, or its equivalent, for best results. And as twilight surgery is relatively new, only use a surgeon who has done the procedure before many, many times before. Remember, you only live once – so ensure you do the best to take care of your health while you can, and don’t stint on money when it comes to something like an operation.

Disadvantages of Twilight Surgery:

In some case, twilight surgery is there to alleviate anxiety if a patient has had a traumatic experience while under general anesthesia. So if the thought of being awake during your operation causes you evenmore undue stress, perhaps you should opt for a general anesthetic.

Other disadvantages include…

In some cases, the patient could move or flinch during the operation, not a good idea when a surgeon is wielding a large knife…

Patient could suffer a bad experience during the operation and later feel traumatized

Often patients can feel a minor pulling and/or tugging during surgery, which some may find unpleasant

Advantages of Twilight Surgery:

The advantages are numerous, although remember that twilight surgery is not suitable for every type of cosmetic procedure…

Patient can respond to surgeon and move face or other body parts during the operation

Quicker recovery period than surgery performed under general anesthesia

No complications or difficulties associated with general anesthesia

Shorter hospital stay, in most cases, as opposed to surgery done under general anesthesia

No breathing tube required during surgery or after

Many patients say they have less bruising and bleeding afterwards, as well as no post-operative nausea, which is a common after-effect of general anesthesia

Twilight sleep is commonly used during dental surgery with few complications, although some people worry (unduly) that they will reveal some embarrassing secret to their dentist while they are under, or will do something they will regret. Remember that everyone has a different reaction to specific medications, and that a true professional will not even notice if you act a bit more brazen than usual – they may even enjoy it!

However, twilight surgery is not for everyone, especially the squeamish or those who experience deep anxiety when even contemplating an operation. But if your plastic surgeon believes you will have better results with twilight surgery, as in the case of a facelift, nose job or liposuction – or if you have had a bad experience with general anesthesia – this may be a good option for you.

Remember, many common operations, such as eyelid surgery, dental surgery and nose jobs, are done with twilight sedation and local anesthesia. It all depends your own comfort level, as well as the comfort level of your plastic surgeon. If the two of you make a joint decision that twilight surgery is the best plan to follow, then by all means go with it. Just make sure you don’t wake up looking like Rod Serling!
