Pregnancy is the perfect time to relax and unwind, and many expectant moms take advantage of this special point in their lives to give themselves luxurious pampering treats. But while the temptation may be to indulge yourself as much as possible with massages, facials and other spa treatments, make sure you only go for ones that are particularly recommended for pregnant women.

<img class="size-full wp-image-2057" title="waxing" src="http://local.yodle.com/articles/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/waxing.jpg" alt="Your skin may be a lot more sensitive when pregnant, and you may be more sensitive to pain as well. Having your legs waxed, for example, may sound like a great idea – but turn out to be excruciatingly painful, even though it's been relatively painless the last 10 times you've had it done.

The vast majority of pregnant women suffer from pregnancy-related physical complaints, such as backache, muscle tension, bloating and even foot cramps. While there are numerous medical spa treatments out there which can relieve such problems, some are not recommended for moms-to-be, and can even be downright dangerous to the unborn child.

If you feel like you could benefit from a spot of pregnancy pampering, don’t leave your health, and that of your baby’s, to chance. While the vast majority of medical spas are aware of what’s safe for expectant mothers, not all are. Remember, when it comes down to brass tacks, the responsibility for playing it safe is in your hands.

Steer Straight Ahead

Here is a list of treatments suitable for pregnant women:

Facials. Facials that are not too invasive or don’t use harsh chemicals or peels are considered safe. Try an Elemis Spa facial or or one from your favorite skincare specialist, such as Decleor or Clarins. Products that are natural and organic without any strong chemicals are the best if you’re pregnant.

Massages. Most massages are good for pregnancy, although some women may find it too uncomfortable to lie on their back. See if you can find a med spa that has a special massage table that has a bump cut out to fit your own bump! Be aware, however, that some massage oils are not recommended for use during pregnancy, including juniper, clary sage and even, surprisingly, peppermint.

Hair removal involving waxing. You might find this more painful than normal as most women have an increased sensitivity to pain when pregnant (see below). But leg waxing, underarm waxing and even getting rid of that bristly bikini line is considered fine during pregnancy. You wouldn’t want your obstetrician to see you with hairy legs, would you? And try doing it yourself in your eighth month…

Pedicure or manicure. A basic mani or pedi is fine. Some people, however, believe that having artificial nails or extensions can be dangerous to the unborn child because of the chemicals used.

Reflexology. This form of foot massage can be of great relief to some women, but it’s important to let your reflexologist know you’re pregnant. Rule of thumb is not to have treatments during the first trimester, or if you have placenta previa (low-lying placenta) or hydroaminos, or an excess of amniotic fluid after 32 weeks’ gestation. Also not good for women at a risk of deep-vein thrombosis or pre-eclampsia, or those who have gone into pre-term labor.

Acupuncture. This ancient needle art is widely used to treat morning sickness and make expectant mothers feel more comfortable overall. It is considered safe throughout the three trimesters but you should let your acupuncturist know you are pregnant nonetheless. Some acupuncturists like to wait past the first six weeks.

Steer Clear

Here are treatments NOT suitable for pregnant women:

Hair removal involving bleaches or other kinds of hair removing cream. Not recommended as the chemicals can be absorbed into your body.

Electrolysis. While most practitioners agree it’s safe to have this hair removal procedure carried out on your face during pregnancy, avoid having it done on your body – and especially the nipple area during the last few weeks! Remember, also, that you may have excess hair growth during pregnancy that will go away once the baby is born.

Chemical peels and dermabrasion. It’s assumed that the strong chemicals used can enter your bloodstream, and cause harm to the unborn child.

Tooth whitening/permanent make-up application. Nobody knows whether these are completely safe or not as not enough research has been carried out, so it’s best to avoid them.

Saunas, steam rooms and very hot Jacuzzis. Stay away from the heat when you’re pregnant – these types of spa treatments may sound enticing but they’re thought to be potentially harmful to your unborn child, as they can raise your body temperature to dangerously high levels. Ditto for hot mud or seaweed wraps etc.

Treatments involving any type of injections, such as dermal fillers etc. This are dangerous as there is a chance the substance can actually reach – and harm – the fetus.

Laser treatments. Stay away from lasers while pregnant – just in case. Most spas that offer laser therapy of any kind do not accept pregnant women anyway.

Tanning beds. Apart fro the risk of getting overheated; a melanoma can spread to the placenta, and thus affect your unborn child.

Tattooing. As your skin will change during your pregnancy, once you’ve delivered you might not recognize the tattoo you got while pregnant! Also, the risk of unsterilized needles makes this a no-no.

Hair dyes or chemical straightening techniques etc. Best to wait until you’ve given birth.

Top Tips

Keep in mind that your skin may be a lot more sensitive when pregnant, and you may be more sensitive to pain as well. Having your legs waxed, for example, may sound like a great idea – but turn out to be excruciatingly painful, even though it’s been relatively painless the last 10 times you’ve had it done.

Many spas choose to play it safe when catering to pregnant women. Some suggest that women don’t have treatments until they are at least in their 12th week of pregnancy, and others restrict treatments to women who are more than 32 weeks’ pregnant. If you need a bit of pampering in your first trimester, opt for a simple manicure or facial and have the massage later.

If it’s not obvious you’re pregnant, tell your practitioner, instructor or beauty therapist. It’s better that they may the decision about what is safe for you, as they know everything that is involved within a specific treatment or procedure.

Being pregnant is a fantastic time to concentrate on yourself and your changing body. It’s also a great time to indulge in pampering treatments, especially as you won’t have time to take advantage of a quiet, peaceful spa once little Junior makes his or her entrance into the world, kicking and screaming his or her little head off.

It’s an age-old story. Men and women desperate to look younger/better/sexier but who lack the funds – or intelligence – to insist on quality treatment get taken in by bogus scams, bogus products and even bogus physicians. You get what you pay for – or do you?

Bogus Treatments and Products

<img class="size-full wp-image-2000" title="priscilla-presley1" src="http://local.yodle.com/articles/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/priscilla-presley1.jpg" alt="Beauty queen and former Elvis love Priscilla Presley, now 62, famously made headlines when she visited a doctor who injected her with “low-grade silicon” he had smuggled into the US. It is thought the silicon was fabricated to grease auto parts, not plump up aging women's faces.

The latest hype about the latest trendy product makes news headlines, and those in the know want to be first. However, they are also often the first to discover that the treatments don’t really work, or that the small benefit they get is not worth the hefty price tag. Here are a few that have either extremely temporary benefits, or none at all…

Oxygen Facial. Can putting a bit of oxygen on your face really make your skin look fresh, younger and rejuvenated? Well, Hollywood actresses jumping on the oxygen facial bandwagon say yes; scientists say no. There is no real evidence that squirting atomized moisturizers, or those infused with oxygen, can have any beneficial effects whatsoever – except on the wallet of the person doing the squirting!

Seaweed Wraps. Supposedly they can help you get rid of excess poundage by drawing out impurities from your body and helping with fluid retention. The ocean slime is wrapped around your body and your skin is detoxified as the mineral-rich seaweed draws out fluid from our cells. So you may lose some water, but will quickly put it back on. Might was well just not drink anything for a few days!

Tua Viso Non Surgical Facelift. This facial exerciser works with a 9-volt battery to exercise the face so you don’t have to, much like an abdominizer supposedly does to your tummy. But it has little scientific evidence to back it up, and many who have tried it say it does nothing.

Rodial Bum Lift. A topical cream that promises an “instant fix” to make your bum look smaller, including reducing 32 percent of cellulite and altering the appearance of wrinkles. But results are temporary, and you need “at least six treatments” for anything more permanent. So why is it advertised as being “instant”?

Smooth Away hair remover. Kind of like sandpaper to buff away unwanted hair and make skin soft and smooth. Unfortunately, feels like sandpaper too – and leaves most of the hair right where it was. Also can make skin feel rough and sore.

Placenta facial. At around $450 a treatment this doesn’t come cheap, but the well-heeled are flocking to have placentas smeared all over their faces. They reckon that if a placenta can nourish a baby in utero, it can nourish them in a beautician’s chair. But while soothing cream applied expertly may make your face look and feel soft and smooth, it’s hardly worth the price tag. And where do those little placentas come from anyway?

Bogus Substances
Sometimes what you think you are getting is not what you are getting. If you have any substance injected into your skin, keep in mind that any type of dermal or other fillers come in specially labeled tubes, with stickers that peel off and are placed into your chart once injected. And check the practitioner’s – and the facility’s – license before you allow them perform any type of procedure on you whatsoever. Here are some horror stories….

Dr Gayle Rothenburg of Houston told patients they were receiving injections of Botox when they actually were injected with a generic product she had picked up at some medical seminar. She was charged with 14 counts, including misbranding a drug. The reason: it was cheaper than actual Botox so could maker her rich – or land her in jail.

Several women in Fresno, California were disfigured when they had bogus collagen injected into their skin. One was left with an unsightly permanent lump on her forehead. It is thought that she probably was injected with industrial-grade silicon.

Beauty queen and former Elvis love Priscilla Presley, now 62, famously made headlines when she visited a doctor who injected her with “low-grade silicon” he had smuggled into the US. It is thought the silicon was fabricated to grease auto parts, not plump up aging women’s faces.

Bogus Doctors
Perhaps even more worrying than a bogus substance being injected into your system is having a bogus plastic surgeon cut up your body. If you are considering having any type of plastic or cosmetic surgery carried out, make sure you use only a fully licensed physician – and don’t be embarrassed to check their credentials in writing. Here’s what happened to some who didn’t…

A Massachusetts woman evidently decided to save some cash and have a nose job and liposuction carried out by a non-licensed plastic surgeon. The clue to his status should have been obvious when he started performing the surgery on a massage table in the living room of his condo. Unfortunately, the patient didn’t live to tell the tale herself.

A man in Barcelona, Spain couldn’t afford to purchase the tools he needed to perform cosmetic surgery on unwitting patients – so he used veterinary tools instead. The bogus 63-year-old “surgeon” was performing boob jobs and butt implants, and worked in the same room as his pets: three dogs, a parrot and a cat.

Gabriela Sanchez, 41, developed such a severe infection after visiting a cut-rate plastic surgeon in Mexico for a boob job that she had to have the implants surgically removed – and now has no breasts at all.

If you want to make yourself look or feel better, always invest in a tried-and-tested product that has a shining reputation and spotless safety record behind it. Beware of quick fixes, products that make outlandish claims, and amazingly cut-priced items – they’re probably cheap for a reason.

And never skimp when it comes to your health, especially as far as having surgery is concerned. Check out a surgeon’s qualifications beforehand and make sure they are 100 percent legitimate before letting them loose on your face and/or body. Who knows – you may even live to regret it!

Magnet therapy is a highly controversial practice because – surprise! - there have been no real studies that have reported any positive effects whatsoever, except for a possible placebo-like effect in some cases.

Magnet therapy has been around for centuries as a way to relieve muscle or joint pain through magnets, which are placed close to the skin. The magnets can be used in a variety of ways, either fashioned into jewelry, placed under a mattress or pillow, inside a shoe, belt or any article of clothing, or put inside a wrist or ankle strap. You can also have magnet therapy at a med spa, where a practitioner will submit your body to certain doses of magnetic energy in the hopes of achieving a beneficial effect.

“Explanations that magnetic fields 'increase circulation,' 'reduce inflammation,' or 'speed recovery from injuries' are simplistic and are not supported by the weight of experimental evidence.” - Michael Barret, MD

Proponents of magnet therapy say that it works by realigning our bodies’ magnetic fields, making us feel and perform better on many levels. By placing magnets over specific parts of the body blood is drawn to that area, they say, and there is a resultant soothing effect on nerves, tissues, muscles and cells.

However, the method, which is also known as biomagnetic or electromagnetic field therapy, is a highly controversial one because – surprise! – there have been no real studies that have reported any positive effects whatsoever, except for a possible placebo-like effect in some cases.

What Exactly Is It?
Magnet therapy dates back to the times of the ancient Egyptians, and has been used by alternative practitioners to treat a myriad of different ailments, ranging from chronic back pain to ulcers to sports injuries and arthritis. Today, some practitioners even use it to diagnose HIV and treat cancer, although it has been widely frowned upon for such purposes.

Interestingly, it is not known exactly how the magnets work – or don’t work – which makes it a lot easier for the people trying to flog them!

Some manufacturers and/or distributors of magnetic products claim they attract the iron in the blood to travel towards them, therefore increasing and improving circulation and making the supply of oxygen more beneficial in the body. Others say they reduce the body’s levels of negative energy, encouraging it do many things, including repair wounds and cuts.

A variety of products for specific conditions are available, including:

Magnetic mattress pads. Advertised as helping everyone to get a good night’s sleep, including people with insomnia, fibromyalgia, lower back pain, poor circulation etc.

Magnetic pillows. Claims to relieve pressure in head and neck to promote healthy sleep.

Acupressure pads. Reportedly helps smokers quit when worn over the “heavenly gate” part of the ear (according to ancient Chinese medicine, that is).

Magnetic period pain pads. Purport to alleviate menstrual pain by supposedly increasing the flow of blood in the uterine area., and stopping a build-up of lactic acid, which is responsible for menstrual cramps.

Bracelets. Claims to alleviate or completely cure numerous chronic conditions ranging from chronic stress to back pain..

Magnetic water wand: If you dip this special wand in water for ten minutes, it promises to ionise the water and make it especially healthy to drink. Claims to be beneficial in particular to people suffering from kidney or stomach problems, as well as skin ailments. Some people believe that drinking water that has been magnetized can revitalize all the organs in the body and actually reduce high blood pressure.

Magnetic hairbrush. This is no joke: the brush magnetically massages your scalp as you use it, purportedly encouraging hair growth and making your hair sleek, shiny and in much better condition. Yeah, right.

Elbow, knee and other supports. Supposedly relieves specific joint pain. You can also purchase special magnetized wraps to wrap around the affected areas, or where there has been a sports or other injury.

Animal products. Specifically designed to better the health of dogs and horses, such as a magnetized pet collar which promises to keep your pet in “excellent health and vitality” when worn. And if s/he dies with the collar on? Sue the bastards!

Super or Simply a Scam?
It is estimated that the magnet therapy market in the United States is worth a whopping great $300 million annually – some estimates put that more than twice as high. But is it a highly respectable health breakthrough, or simply a hoax?

“Explanations that magnetic fields ‘increase circulation,’ ‘reduce inflammation,’ or ’speed recovery from injuries’ are simplistic and are not supported by the weight of experimental evidence,” wrote Michael Barret, MD, in an article titled Magnet Therapy, a Skeptical View.

“There is no scientific basis to conclude that small, static magnets can relieve pain or influence the course of any disease. In fact, many of today’s products produce no significant magnetic field at or beneath the skin’s surface.”

The article goes on to point out several successful lawsuits individuals have taken against companies making claims that their magnets can do everything from reduce leg fatigue to increase blood circulation and are even effective against certain cancers, diabetic conditions and ulcers.

Magnet therapy should never be used in place of conventional medicine. As a form of alternative medicine, it is non-invasive and can certainly provide a placebo-type effect to people who truly believe in it. But there is no steadfast evidence to back up the claims; instead there is a booming market full of different magnetic products that draw in desperate people to pull money out of their wallets and order them.

There is nothing wrong with trying out a magnet or two as long as a) you can afford to do so and b) you are not forsaking clinically proven healing techniques, such as conventional medicine, in favor of using magnets (please note that people with cardiac pacemakers or who are having radiology or an MRI should avoid using magnets). If magnets attract you, keep in mind that you might reap more benefits by spending the money to have a body massage, a spa day, or even a nice meal in a classy restaurant!

...very hairy moles are a different story altogether; some laser treatment, for example, will remove the mole but not the hair, which will...

Cindy Crawford just wouldn’t be Cindy Crawford without her trademark “beauty spot” above her upper lip, and Marilyn Monroe would be a different woman indeed if she were devoid of facial moles. Most of us mere mortals, however, seek to remove moles from the more obvious parts of our body, especially if they are particularly large, bothersome or suspected to be pre-cancerous.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a mole with an irregular border is a warning sign of skin cancer.

But removing moles, also known as nevi, is something not to be taken lightly. Any mole should be looked at by a qualified medical professional, not just a beauty therapist, before any removal is carried out. While plastic surgeons are qualified to remove moles, a doctor should look at it first – and carry out analysis after removal. And please note that very hairy moles are a different story altogether; some laser treatment, for example, will remove the mole but not the hair, which will have to be dealt with at a later date.

Usually one of two methods is employed to get rid of a mole: excision with stitches, or excision with cauterization. Your plastic surgeon or dermatologist will help you decide which is the best method for you (and your mole).

Excision with cauterization, or shave excision. After the areas is cleansed and numbed, the surgeon will “shave” the mole off, either flush with the skin or a bit deeper. The areas will then be cauterized, or burnt, to stop bleeding, then you will have an antibiotic cream applied and a bandage placed on top to keep the area clean. The mole tissue will then be analyzed in the lab to make sure it was not cancerous.

Excision with stitches. Same as above but instead of shaving the mole it will be cut away, then stitched up. This method is preferable with moles that are either very flat or dark – or both. Please note after any type of mole removal the area may be red and sore for a while, and that you will need to apply a decent sunscreen on the area for at least six months as you will experience some sun sensitivity.

Keep in mind also that mole removal can leave you with scars, and in the case of an incompetent surgeon, nerve damage. In some cases, you may still be left with traces of the mole as well, and infection is also not unheard of. In general, allow about an hour for a mole to be removed.

Be aware also that some skin “irregularities” may appear to be moles but are actually something else. Keratosi, for example, appear on the surface of the skin usually after age 30, and are often benign and not moles at all, although they may resemble them (See more below). Birthmarks are not moles, and neither are hemangiomas, or collections of blood vessels that form underneath the skin but which may resemble a mole.

While laser surgery may be recommended for some moles, it is not usually the removal method of choice for moles which are quite deep as the lasers do not penetrate deep enough. Your surgeon might be recommending lasers for marks which are not actually moles, but something which lies much more on the surface, such as a keratosis.

Freeze Therapy isn’t usually thought of as being great for mole removal although it can work on certain types of keratosi such as sebborheic keratosi– although it may leave scars. These look somewhat like “barnacles” on the skin and never become malignant, although they sometimes can be hard to distinguish from a cancerous melanoma, but they can also itch and become a real nuisance. The success of freeze therapy, which uses liquid nitrogen, often depends on the skill of the practitioner.

Why Moles?
Why we get moles is fairly straightforward. We can be born with them, they can appear as we get older, or the sun can influence their appearance. Heredity plays an enormous role in the types of moles we get and their number: if you wonder whether or not you’ll ever be as moley as Great Auntie Wendy, the answer is probably a resounding “yes!”

We can prevent some moles from forming, however, by wearing the right factor sunscreen and protecting our skin from sun damage. Keeping an eye on how our moles look over time is often important, as self-examination can be vital when it comes to catching skin cancer early on.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends keeping an eye of the following warning signs, when it comes to moles, and seeing a skin specialist immediately if you notice anything suspicious. The signs include a skin growth that increases in size and appears pearly, translucent, tan, brown, black, or multicolored.

A mole, birthmark, beauty mark, or any brown spot that:

changes color

increases in size or thickness

changes in texture

is irregular in outline

is bigger than 6mm or 1/4”, the size of a pencil eraser

appears after age 21

A spot or sore that continues to itch, hurt, crust, scab, erode, or bleed

An open sore that does not heal within three weeks

Non-Surgical Mole Removal Methods
Of course, there are other cheaper options to get rid of moles if you want to forsake surgery – but unfortunately they don’t really work. They include:

Creams that boast moles can disappear in a week – or less. You might lose the mole, but you might gain a raised, red scar in its place. Also, this can be dangerous as all moles should be analyzed by a doctor after removal to see if they show signs of cancer.

Potions that claim to boost the immune system from the inside so you never again get moles or skin tags. Yeah, right.

If you have loads of moles, either learn to live with them or see a specialist. Lotions and potions won’t really work, the only thing that does is surgical excision or, in some cases, laser therapy. So get with the program – and get rid of those moles!

Okay, let’s talk straight. For decades, women of African descent the world over have relied on various tried-and-tested methods to “relax” their hair. Then, about a decade ago, the Yuko system made a big stink among people of all colors when it came over from Japan, followed by Opti-Smooth. Now a third contender is fighting to become top dog in the hair straightening stakes: the Brazilian.

Not what the name may imply, the Brazilian is a relatively new hair straightening system that has nothing to do with waxing away pubic hair. It is a semi-permanent way to straighten the hair on your head, which uses keratin – and sometimes formaldehyde – to tame even the curliest locks. But while it may be taking the world of hair by storm, even it has its drawbacks…

If you are considering straightening your hair for more than just an occasional night out, you may be thinking of a permanent hair straightening system. Here is the best – and the worst – of the most popular systems currently on offer. Remember, success will depend not only on your type of hair and how rigorously you adhere to its upkeep, but also on the skill of your stylist – as well as the products he or she chooses to use.

Brazilian Hair Straightening (aka Brazilian Blow-Out or Brazilian Keratin Treatment). The stylist applies active keratin, a protein found in the top layer of our skin which makes it both waterproof and tough, although sometimes this is used in conjunction with formaldehyde, which can be dangerous (see below). The formula is then sealed into the hair using a hot iron, taking away frizz, curls and unruly waves. Takes about two hours, more for longer or more unruly hair.

PROS: Will fade away gradually, meaning that it will eventually grow out and leave you with natural waves once more. Takes less salon time and generally costs less than the Yuko or Opti-Smooth system. Leaves the hair with more body than the Yuko System and can be used on dyed hair as well as virgin hair.
CONS: The effect doesn’t last as long as Yuko or Opti-Smooth – about three to four months. And if the product contains actual formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, – you will need to check with the salon first – this could reportedly be a health hazard, for both you and your stylist as well. Note that the FDA does not regulate the use of formaldehyde in cosmetics.

The Yuko System. Created in the 1990s, this can make any type of curly hair straight in about five hours – for about six months or so, depending on hair. After a consultation with your stylist, your hair will be washed and divided into segments, then the application will be put on for roughly 20 minutes, depending on hair length etc. It will then be flat-ironed and a neutralizer will be put on to reset the bonds of the hair. It will then be rinsed, followed by a blow-dry, style and perhaps a cut. The whole process takes roughly five hours in total.

PROS: Last forever. That means that you won’t see any curly hair until new hair grows in.
CONS: Last forever. That means that when new curly hair grows in, you will have a ring of frizz on the top followed by dead straight hair. The only way to look “normal” – with hair either entirely straight or entirely curly – is to have your hair redone, in about six months’ time, or to straighten the top bits with straightening irons. Also, repeated application of the Yuko system can cause extensive damage to hair – and not just the ends. Not recommended for use on color-treated hair as it will damage it too much.

Opti-Smooth. Similar to the Yuko System, but you will have a choice of results: cold-smoothing is for less frizz, progressive smoothing will leave you hair looking as if it’s just been freshly blow-dried, and heat-straightening will make it look iron-rod straight (that’s just so passe, darling!).

PROS: Lasts forever (see Yuko, above). If your hair is shorter or you choose cold-smoothing, the salon time will be considerably lessened.
CONS: Lasts forever (see Yuko, above). Unlike the Yuko system, however, Opti-Smooth claims to be kinder to hair long-term, with less damage and breakage. Not for dyed hair.

Other Ways To Straighten Hair

Blow-Drying. Many people seek to blow-dry their hair to make it straight and sleek, although often only a salon blow-dry can have truly effective results. Can damage hair long-term.

Hair Straighteners. A variety of flat irons or hair straighteners are on the market today – those with ceramic plates are usually considered the best as they work by gliding through the hair without it catching on the edges and splitting. It’s advised to use them sparingly with special products/gels that minimize heat damage to the hair.

Home Relaxing Kits. Much like a do-it-yourself salon-style routine. Apply straightening cream, leave on, rinse away, straighten with straightening iron, neutralize, wash and blow dry. Takes about two hours in total, more for longer hair. Good luck!

Ironing. Time was when many young girls had their hair ironed – with a clothes iron – to have straighter tresses. The process could take up to an hour and was often saved for special occasions. Required two people: one to lay her head on the ironing board while the other wielded the iron. Had to be a trusted friend – with excellent eyesight!

Hair straightening is just another way that us mortals deal with “the grass is greener” syndrome. In the 1970s and 1980s everyone was rushing to have a perm and make their straight hair curly, now the reverse is the talk of the town.

If you decide to go the permanently straight route, it’s important to find a salon you trust. Take heed if your hair is dyed, colored or even just highlighted, as this may affect the outcome of the straightening process – even if your stylist assures you this isn’t the case!

Remember, also, that all chemically straightened hair will require a good hair-care routine to keep it looking good. This means using a protein-rich shampoo, conditioner and other anti-frizz products, as locking in all the moisture possible will be crucial in maintaining that salon style.

Deep, pitted acne scars, particularly those on the face, can make even the most confident among us suffer a self-esteem crisis from time to time. Scarring of any kind can greatly impact an individual, and while acne scars can look “rugged” on some men – think Harrison Ford, Robert Redford and Clint Eastwood – most women usually hate them.

While it may sound cliched, learning to live with yourself is perhaps the easiest, as well as safest and cheapest, way to deal with physical imperfections of any kind.

Acne usually begins with the onset of puberty, when we produce more sebum, the oily secretion made by our sebaceous glands, than our bodies can cope with gracefully. Prescription acne medications can often nip those pimples in the bud, but for some of us there is no escaping them – as well as the subsequent scarring.

Luckily, there are myriad treatments available on the market today that can either completely remove scars, or reduce their appearance significantly. Many dermatological procedures to reduce the appearance of acne scars can be carried out either by your dermatologist or at a med spa. Just make sure the person scraping, lasering or digging holes in your face is someone you trust!

Dermatological Acne Scar Removal Procedures

Laser Therapy. Works by making keloid scars, where this an overgrowth of tissue, and hypertrophic scars, which look similar to keloids but are smaller, less visible. Also works well on atrophic scarring, or tiny pockets in the skin which can be a direct result of acne. The magic of the lasers is that they remove a scar’s outer skin layer, revealing a bottom layer that eventually heals and by doing so minimizes the visibility of the scar itself. The type of laser used will depend on the type of scarring you have. You may suffer redness for several months, but the upside is that in some cases, one treatment is all you need for permanent results.

* Steroid Injections. Sometimes these are used in conjunction with lasers, jabbed directly into keloid scars, to make them flat and less visible. It is difficult, however, to raise depressions, or pockets, except by regenerating the skin. Steroid injections are usually the only way to treat keloid scarring that occurs from acne scars, as surgical removal of them is seldom instrumented.

Dermabrasion. Thought to be the best method for acne scar removal, and is a more severe form of Microderm (see below). Instead of abrasive particles being used, your practitioner will use a brush (or fraise) to remove the skin. Superficial scars may disappear completely, deeper ones will be make less noticeable. Does not work for all types of scars, and people with darker skin might require additional treatment to sort out resultant pigmentation problems.

Microdermabrasion. A technique in which the top, superficial layer of the skin is removed, both to stimulate the production of collagen (and encourage healing) and reveal softer, smoother skin underneath. Often called a “lunchtime peel” because Microderm can be carried out so quickly – in your lunch hour – the procedure works well in areas where acne scarring is not very deep. It can also be done in conjunction with chemical peels, as it will make the chemicals seep in easier.

Collagen Injections. Injections of bovine-sourced or human collagen plump out the scars, making them instantly less noticeable. Advantage: works well. Disadvantage: may only last for three months; bovine collagen is not good for people with comprised immune systems; does not work on all types of scarring, such as ice pick scars, which leave a tiny hole which looks as if it has been made by an ice pick or other similar instrument.

Chemical Peels. A variety of chemical peels are on offer that both plump up the skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars, and also smooth and exfoliate to make skin look better – and reduce future occurrence of acne breakouts. Depending on the nature of your skin you can opt for a light, medium-strength or stronger peel. Just make sure you choose one that doesn’t exacerbate your skin even further!

Surgery. Some types of scars, such as ice pick scars, can be removed by “punching” them down during surgery, then suturing the skin back together. Or try Z-Plasty, aka zigzagplasty, where a scar is repositioned to blend in better with your face – along the natural creases of the cheek, or elsewhere.

Medical Tattooing. As scar tissue that is light-colored has no pigment, tattoos can infuse color to make them blend in better with the rest of your skin. Can also help scars to “relax” and re-pigment naturally. Finally, if you have only one tattoo in a not very noticeable area, ask your doctor if you can tattoo it with a pattern or design…

Fat Transfer. Fat is taken from other parts of your body and injected into a scar to plump it out. Remember, the fat will eventually be absorbed into the body, so you will need to repeat this time and time again to keep up the look.

Lotions and potions. Some people find that certain types of acne scarring reduction creams work wonders; others find they have no effect whatsoever. A lot will depend on the type of scar you have, as well as the severity of your scarring. It’s all a matter of trial-and-error…

Even the best surgeons cannot completely remodel a face so that it looks completely different – not unless you were willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars having countless operations. While surgery can help get rid of the worst acne scars, you will probably still have some pitting left if your face – or your neck or back – was deeply affected by acne as a teenager.

While it may sound cliched, learning to live with yourself is perhaps the easiest, as well as safest and cheapest, way to deal with physical imperfections of any kind. If that doesn’t work for you, remember that one of the Harley Davidson mantras is “chicks love scars”. Hopefully, you can also learn to love them – or at least love yourself with them!

Only boys under age seven want to be referred to as “Spiderman”, and you certainly don’t want that nickname if it’s purely because of the tiny purplish spider veins that have broken out on your face and legs. Although the appearance of thread veins, or spider veins, becomes increasingly common with age, it’s not that difficult to get rid of them – if you know how.

Elevating your legs (without crossing them) is one way to reduce the amount of spider veins you have.

It’s estimated that at least half of all people over age 50 have thread veins, which are simply enlarged blood vessels which are visible through the skin, in several places: knees, ankles, legs and parts of the face, especially on the cheeks and around the nose. Although they are most common among women, they also afflict men – even though some say they appear due to the prevalence of the female hormone, estrogen. Most people start getting them between the ages of 30 – 60, although is some cases they appear when an individual is still in his or her teens.

Luckily, several treatments now exist to treat the veins, which in medical parlance are called telangiectasia or “sunburst varicosities” – a lovely name for an unattractive sight! While they cause no physical harm, they can be ugly and cause undue emotional distress. Before having them removed, however, check with your doctor to make sure they are not the result of an underlying vascular condition.

Why We Get Veins
We get spider veins because we’re human. The human skin is a fragile thing, and veins can appear due to a number of causes, including a backup or pooling of blood in an area, excessive alcohol consumption, trauma, age, genetics, hormones, pregnancy, taking certain medications and exposure to the sun.
A variety of treatments are available to get rid of spider veins. Be aware that some thread veins are actually connected to varicose veins, which is why it’s important to have an ultrasound first before having any treatment to remove them. This is to stop them from reappearing.

If your spider veins measure more than 3mm, it might be a good idea to have them removed surgically. Most of the treatments listed below are only for smaller veins. It is recommended that around five treatments on average will be required to achieve the look you want, but every case is different – so talk things over in detail with your physician or qualified practitioner before you begin.

Treatments Available

Microsclerotherapy. A bit sticky, this one. Your veins will be injected with a fluid that makes the vein walls stick together, which stops blood from flowing to the area and prevents them from reoccurring. Don’t worry that your legs will be full of blood afterwards: the veins eventually will be absorbed by the body completely. However, as the vein must be large enough to accommodate a needle, this treatment is best for large or medium-sized veins.

Pros: It’s estimated that most patients see an improvement anywhere from 50 to 90 percent.

Cons: Good for the legs but not great for delicate parts of the body such as ankles or face. Is not always successful first time around, so follow-up treatments may be necessary for maximum effect.

Laser Treatment: Strong bursts of light are directed at the veins, which eventually fade away and disappear. About two to five treatments are necessary, with each treatment lasting up to one hour. Be aware that large spider veins usually respond better to sclerotherapy (see above) than laser treatment. Also, the veins will appear bigger and darker immediately after treatment, before they begin to fade. This is the treatment of choice for facial veins.

Pros: Considered the most effective treatment on the market today.

Cons: You can experience burns and scars if this technique is not carried out properly.

Veinwave: This thermo-coagulation technique destroys veins by heating them, using microwave technology. A fine needle is introduced over the veins, making them disappear almost instantly.

Pros: It’s not very painful, compared to other treatments, and can be used to treat either face, legs or both.

Cons: In some cases scarring may occur.

PhotoDerm: Intense pulsed light therapy reduces the melanin in your skin, making the veins fade away. Reddening may occur short-term, and several sessions may be necessary.

Pros: Can also be used to treat other skin conditions, such as port wine stains and rosacea.

Cons: Can only be used on the face.

Ways to Prevent Spider Veins
There is no fool-proof way to prevent all spider veins from occurring. But there are ways to minimize the number of veins you have. They include:

Always wear sunscreen and minimize exposure to the sun.

Elevate your legs when resting, don’t cross them

Watch your weight and eat a diet low in salt and high in fiber.

Get different parents!

Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $500 on up per session to remove spider veins, depending on the treatment you choose and the severity of the problem. You may also pay more if you choose to have a physician perform the technique rather than a qualified technician. Whoever you choose, make sure they are qualified and experienced, and that they have performed the technique countless times before.

Not every woman who visits her cosmetician wants to end up looking like a Mexican hairless, one of those rare breeds of dog whose skin feels incredibly smooth because it’s not covered by a thick pelt of fur. But if you do want to go all bare down there, it’s nice to know that these days, you can.

In fact, the easiest – and best – way to look smooth and sleek in your bikini (and out of it) is by having a professional bikini wax. Whether you want to look beautiful on the beach or plan on giving your husband the birthday or anniversary present of his life, there are loads of waxes out there that will suit virtually every whim and fancy.

You may have to pay, but be warned: this really is a case of “don’t try it at home”. If you do, the results can be disastrous: anything from a deep red, prickly rash to a quick trip down to your local ER. Play is safe and have it done by a professional – you (probably) won’t regret it!

Types of Waxes

In alphabetical order, here are the most popular waxes available at medi-spas today…

American Wax. We Yankees have a reputation for being prudes, which is why this wax is the least daring on the market. It is, essentially, for the woman who simply wants to avoid the wrenching embarrassment of having those tiny pubes protruding from her bathing suit. A quick clip there and a bit of wax there and it’s all done in a moment.

Brazilian Wax. This was reportedly originated in Brazil, and came to the United States thanks to a group of sisters who started offering the treatment in the United States to women who wanted to add a bit more Latina spice to their lives. All the hair is removed, with the exception of a small line of virtual stubble affectionately dubbed a “landing strip”.

French Wax: All the hair in front is removed, the hair near your bottom is left intact. Begs the question: pourquoi?

Natural Bikini Wax: Hair is removed from the legs, butt and around the bikini area, while a “natural-looking” bush is left intact.

Playboy Wax: Same as a Brazilian, but a thinner line is left.

The Sphinx: The Full Monty. Everything is off. Looks as pre-pubescent as possible. Some men – and maybe some women – say this is more hygienic, and also facilitates amazing oral sex. In a word: yuck.

Top Tips for Wonderful Waxes

A bikini wax can be a messy affair, so although you may feel embarrassed doing so, you might want to wear a pair of old underpants you can chuck away afterwards. Some salons will supply paper pants, but others do not.

If you’re a waxing virgin, expect the worst. That means that you will have to spread your legs in front of a complete stranger and think of Granny, and you may be asked to assume poses that are not altogether delicate for maximum hair removal. If you’ll find this too embarrassing, stay home.

Don’t swim or lie in the sun for at least 24 hours before and after you have a bikini wax. A gentle exfoliation before and after can help minimize the very real risk of ingrown hairs, which can be dealt with by applying ice and then antibacterial cream to ward off any risk of infection.

While having the right amount of hair is key, not having too much is also important. Don’t waste your money by having a wax before you’ve witnessed enough re-growth; by the same token, it can be a bit embarrassing if your practitioner has to chop off all your pubic hair with a pair of garden shears before they can get down to business.

If you have certain medical conditions, such as psoriasis or diabetes, or take specific acne medications, ask a medical professional about whether a wax is right for you. Similarly, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you may want to abstain for a while. And remember, you will be a lot more sensitive to pain if you are menstruating, so timing can be everything.

Waxing is addictive. That means once you have it done, you’ll probably come back for more – especially as the hair that grows back could come in thicker, and will definitely be itchy and feel rough to the touch. Then again, you might prefer a new, thicker bush!

Some men prefer to wear teeny tiny swimsuits, or “budgie smugglers”, as they call them in Australia. If you fall into this category, you may find a bikini wax would suit you as well. If so, make sure you ask whether your chosen salon will cater to both men and women before you book the appointment.

If you don’t like the look of the salon, leave. The state of New Jersey almost banned genital waxing recently after two women were “injured” while having Brazilian bikini waxes. Both were hospitalized after suffering infections from the procedure, although they – and their genitals – have since made a full recovery, according to reports.

Buy Yourself a Merkin
If you’ve had a full Brazilian and find you don’t really care for the look, or if you’re going a bit grey, then a merkin may be in order. Otherwise known as a “pubic wig”, these fun and frivolous snatches of hair (no pun intended) can change any boring bedtime routine into a boudoir bonanza.

Legend has it that way back in the 1600s, when prostitutes realised they had either an infestation of public lice or syphilis, they were forced to shave off all their public hair. Canny businesswomen invested in a pubic wig, as supposedly they hid the ravages of disease.

These days, women buy merkins – often dyed in psychedelic colors – as a bit of fun. They can be dyed and shaped to suit any fancy. If you’re a bit hesitant about going in for a salon wax this may be a suitable alternative. You can also have a “real” merkin by getting a wax in which a tiny bit of hair is left in the shape of a heart or other design, then dyed..

What’s in a name? If Juliet of wherefore-art-thou fame were alive today, she might well ask this question about medical spas (or medi-spas as they are also called). The answer would be: the jury is still out as to what constitutes a medical spa, exactly. It seems that the term medical spa can refer to any facility—be it in a mall, storefront, doctor’s office or the backroom of a beauty salon—that provides any number of aesthetic services from hair removal to massages and facials, even services once confined to the province of medicine like various laser therapies.

Medical spas are burgeoning, a phenomenon driven by consumer demand and the recognition that there’s money to be made in them thar wrinkles, sags, skin blemishes and hirsute areas. As more and more people clamor for glamour and an increasing number of physicians become disenchanted and frustrated with a troubled health care system that continues to erode their professional control, the climate for entrepreneurial development ripens. Witness medical professionals and lay entities alike jumping into the medical-spa fray, even cooperating, by forming partnerships, corporations and all sorts of other quasi-legal business arrangements to supply the increasing demand for services.

Today’s aesthetic medicine is not your mother’s brand, in fact, even the physicians who are performing some of the procedures like laser treatments and BOTOX injections have changed. Attend a laser seminar or cosmetic surgery meeting and you will observe not just the usual genre of dermatologists and laser surgeons, but gastroenterologists, family practitioners, even OB/GYNs interested in jumping on the medical spa bandwagon by broadening their practices to include aesthetic services.

Adding to the confusion of (1) new and ever-changing services (2) physicians from specialties other than cosmetic medicine participating in the delivery of aesthetic services and (3) the existence of a multitude of varying business arrangements is the fact that few states have any regulations in place to guide medical spa owners or consumers. Guidelines as to what procedures are or are not appropriate and who should or should not administer them are sparse and tenuous at best.

The urgency felt by state regulatory bodies and medical societies to formulate guidelines for medical spas, including standardizing procedures and defining practitioner qualifications, has been lethargic at best. However, the rash of medical spa boo-boos reported by the media of late has reenergized the guideline process. For those unfortunate few on the receiving end of deleterious results at the hands of incompetent spa personnel, a well meaning desire to create and enforce guidelines by state governments and medical organizations is a case of too little too late.

That said, in fairness to those bodies attempting to create guidelines for the purpose of oversight and regulation, it must be pointed out that the issue is complicated by the many different professionals who may be practicing their specialties under the same roof: cosmetologists, electrologists, aestheticians, nurses, and physicians. In states like Massachusetts for instance, each of these professions is licensed by its own board, and each board has its own standards. The trick in writing a defining set of regulations peculiar to the operation of medical spas requires incorporating each profession’s standards into the guidelines for each cosmetic procedure—not an easy task.

The American Society for Lasers in Surgery and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery produced actual guidelines for medical spa personnel, but without regulatory oversight, these guidelines have little clout. The prevalence of regulatory differences between states further complicates matters. For example, in some states laser hair removal is classified under the practice of medicine (meaning the procedure must be performed by a licensed medical practitioner), while in other states, this same procedure can be performed by non-medical, but certified or licensed personnel with the stipulation that a physician be immediately available on site, not just a telephone call away. Some states require procedures to be performed under medical supervision, but the definition of “supervision” is so loosely defined that it can mean anything from having the physician physically present at the procedure to several rooms away or even just available by telephone.

So called “medical equipment” is also in regulation limbo. A medical grade laser hair removal device can be purchased by a spa owner (even when no physician is on staff to render the service) with the supposition that a physician will then be hired to perform the actual procedure. This begs the question: Does anyone know if the physician is actually present or even hired?

The bottom line in this confusing morass of rules and no-rules is this: There is no standardized regulation of medical spas across all states and all disciplines. Regulations that do exist differ from state to state, not all states have regulations and some states have no regulations in place at all.

There is little doubt that consumers of medical spa services remain in need of greater protection.

Likewise, owners of medical spas offering legitimate and safe services would benefit by having their industry regulated. For everyone involved in the dispensation of cosmetic procedures, enhanced regulation and oversight can’t come too soon. Until it does, the caveat for the consumer of medical spa services is to undertake your own due diligence to protect yourself from risk.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is concerned about the lack of consumer education with respect to the risks associated with procedures performed in medical spas by unlicensed personnel. The Society cautions consumers not to let anyone “inject anything into your body without the advice of a doctor.” It also warns against undergoing any cosmetic procedure offered in a non-clinical setting such as a beauty salon and stresses that “only licensed practitioners should perform cosmetic procedures.”

The ASAPS recommends checking to see if the facility is accredited, but this is easier said than done because not all facilities are accredited by the same organization necessitating an investigation into which accrediting organizations are truly credible—simply too difficult a task for most consumers.

A good deal of information can be found on the website of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, www.abplsurg.org, in the Q & A section including what it means to be board certified, how to check the credentials of a particular practitioner and how to know if your physician is certified to perform the type of cosmetic procedure you are seeking.

When you begin your investigation of a particular medical spa prior to using its services, ask first about physician supervision and what that really means. Find out the physician’s area of practice. Is he/she a dermatologist, a plastic surgeon or from some other discipline? Ask if the surgeon is board certified and if the answer is yes, be sure to ask for the name of the board that has granted him/her certification. It is not very reassuring to know that the supervising physician is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery when what you want is laser treatment on your face.

Next, if you know the cosmetic procedure you are seeking, ask about the person who will actually perform the service. Is this person required by law to be licensed and certified? If so, by what entity? How many years has this practitioner been performing this service?

Be sure to ask about malpractice insurance and professional liability insurance. Is the physician covered? Are the non-medical personnel covered as well as the business? If something goes wrong, who will pay the bill for any needed correction?

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), in an effort to advance healthy outcomes and protect patient safety, have created a list of questions you should ask “before committing to any procedure or medical treatment in a spa or non-traditional facility.” You can find the complete list at http://www.surgery.org/press/news-release.php?iid=462.

Frankly, the list is daunting—so many questions to ask and so much information to absorb—but without the appropriate answers you are putting yourself at risk. Only you can ask yourself, what price beauty?
