People who use dermal filler injections are delighted by the results – and as they last longer than BOTOX you don't have to come in as often for a touch-up.

Dr. Guljeet Sohal is the owner of Balle Bliss, a med spa based in her hometown of Cypress, Texas, that seeks to bring specialized, personalized care back into the practice of medicine. Here, she discusses why BOTOX can be a good choice for people of any age – and either gender – but that it can’t fix everything.

One nice thing about BOTOX is that it can be used among people of any age. We have people in our med spa coming for BOTOX treatments who are in their mid-twenties, all the way into their seventies. Women who are a bit older also want to look their best, and there’s no reason why they can’t use BOTOX to give them a more youthful appearance.

BOTOX is a special substance. It is derived from the botulinum toxin, a poison made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In small quantities, it works by paralyzing muscles, so that frown lines, furrows and wrinkles which are normally caused by facial expression do not appear.

The main thing to remember, however, is that BOTOX is mainly used in the upper face, to get rid of these types of frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. A lot of times we have people who come in who think you can fill the nasolabial folds with BOTOX, or the skin folds that run from each side of the nose down to the corners of the mouth.

But those deep nasolabial folds, and also what we call marionette lines, or lines forming below the corner of your mouth running down to the chin, respond better to dermal fillers. That’s because they are caused not by muscle contraction, but are actually the result of volume lost, usually due to age.

At Balle Bliss, we recommend the use of dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane or Radiesse to get rid of marionette lines or deep nasal folds. These natural injectable fillers can last anywhere from six months to a year – or longer in the case of Radiesse – and plump up lines in the face by adding instant volume.

People who use dermal filler injections are delighted by the results – and as they last longer than BOTOX you don’t have to come in as often for a touch-up. They are safe as they are made from non-animal derived substances, and there has never been an allergic reaction recorded to any of the ones we use in our med spa. Why don’t you give them a try if BOTOX is not what you need?

You’ve looked in the mirror and noticed that your face is lined, your skin is dry and your hair, as they say in the commercials, is brittle and lifeless. Time for a body break! A trip to the spa is what you crave, so you scan the local offerings and—shrivel up a little bit more. Too many choices, all sounding lovely and/or clinical enough to fix what ails you … if only you knew what that was.

All the more reason to get thee to the spa. Now is the time to put your face and your body in the hands of professionals. Yes, these people go to school: facialists, massage therapists, hair artists, estheticians. Most states license their work, to make sure that they follow healthy and safe procedures. Medical spas will have fully credentialed doctors and nurses on staff. A licensing board provides quality control and gives unsatisfied customers someone to complain to. But you probably won’t need to file a grievance. In fact, when it’s over, you’ll be begging for your next appointment.

What Types of Spas Await You

It’s easy to sort out the different types of spas. Choose from:

Residential health retreats

Beauty day spas

Relaxation day spas

Medical procedure spas

Theme spas

Resort spas

First, there are day spas that send you home beautiful at the end of the day. Then, there are residential spas, where you stay for a week or more, so that the healthy stuff sinks in. Some of these bed, body and breakfast establishments are educational, such as the famed Esalen Institute in Northern California and Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon. Some are housed at luxury resorts, such as Cal-a-Vie in Southern California, or on luxury cruise liners, such as Aqua Spa on some Celebrity cruises.

Of the day spas, some focus on beauty maintenance, including facial, hair, makeup and nail treatments. Others focus on relaxation, with more body and mind work like massage, hydrotherapy and aromatherapy. Medical spas perform little repairs that don’t require a trip to the plastic surgeon, such as teeth whitening, collagen injections and skin rejuvenation.

Any of these salons might have a theme, usually tending toward the exotic and foreign. Thai, Balinese and Tahitian-themed spas offer unique massage and floral therapies.

So, to choose your spa, ask yourself:

Can I afford a day or a week away from home?

Is stress, a new look, or aging my target priority?

Do I need a Tahitian wrap or an Indian head massage?

Who Winds Up in A Day Spa

This kind of elevated R&R is not just for the rich and famous (read, “spoiled”) anymore. The concept of taking a break to focus on physical well-being and mental attitude is mainstream these days. Of course, you can go as over the top as you like with the luxury. Or you can get an affordable facial and come out smelling like a rose.

That means you’ll see both the ordinary and the high-fallutin’ guys and gals at just about any spa. Yes—guys, too. You can thank the cosmetic companies for inuring the fellas to hair gel and beard softeners; now men flock to beauty services, although they may prefer the term “gentlemen’s grooming enhancements.”

So, you’ll rub elbows with men and women of all ages and body types. Kids are welcome at some salons, usually with an age limit by type of service. Salon days and stays are popular activities and gifts for wedding parties, deserving employees, moms and daughters, and guys who like to have their toenails clipped while sipping a beer or scotch.

What’s Not to Like?

Since the benefits of bodywork and cosmetic treatments are more than skin deep, you really get your money’s worth from a spa visit. Massage, reflexology and hot tub soaks send oxygen to tired muscles and improve circulation. Facials and wraps exfoliate and rehydrate skin, the body’s largest organ. Eucalyptus steam baths and aromatherapy clear the respiratory system and heighten your mood.

Even hair and nail treatments and styling keep you healthy and make you feel great when you look in the mirror. There truly are too many benefits to list. Just about any service you can choose from a reputable spa will add vigor and happiness to your life.

As the number of cosmetic dental procedures has increased in recent years, so has the demand for dental spas across the country. A cross between a dentist’s office and a beauty spa, dental spas are designed to make everyday dental procedures less scary by utilizing a number of relaxation techniques throughout the office. Visits to dental spas grew by 143 percent between 1997 and 2002, according to the International SPA Association, making dental spas one of the fastest growing niche fields in the medical industry.

With dental spas, gone are the days of scary dentists haunting your nightmares.

Despite the recent surge in popularity, dental spas have actually been around for more than 30 years, when dentists first began looking into ways to make a trip to their office a more pleasant experience. Since then, the dental spa industry has gotten a boost from the abundance of new cosmetic procedures that bring patients into the office more frequently and for longer periods of time.

What is a dental spa?

Dental spas are licensed dental facilities where patients can undergo a variety of dental procedures in a more relaxing atmosphere than the standard dentist’s office. To do this, dental spas utilize a number of age-old techniques meant to sooth patients, many of which are also used in popular day spas.

In large cities and small towns, dental spas are commonly found in hospitals, health clubs, and resort or hotel settings, as well as medical parks and shopping centers. Patients visiting a dental spa for the first time can expect to find a soothing, calming atmosphere, commonly decorated with soft colors and candlelight, similar to a day spa environment.

Among the services offered at a dental spa that may not be offered at a standard dentist’s office: Patients are welcome to experience complimentary massages and reflexology while undergoing stressful dental procedures, and may also occasionally be offered the chance to relax in vibrating chairs, watch movies, or listen to music during the exams as well—all with the goal of putting the patient in as relaxed a state as possible.

In addition, many dental spas offer a wider variety of cosmetic dental procedures than those offered in other medical offices. These include teeth whitening, veneers, enamel shaping, contouring, and bonding, along with the more standard dental procedures such as cleanings and cavity fillings.

Who should consider going to a dental spa?

Patients with a fear of the dentist are considered excellent candidates for dentistry spas, where they can expect to receive the same quality of care with less fear-inducing stress. Beyond those with an overwhelming fear of dentists, however, dental spas are an excellent option for just about anyone needing dental care. Because these offices offer virtually every service a person could need—from basic teeth cleaning to more advanced root canals and other procedures—just about anyone can consider visiting one.

What are the benefits of dental spas?

Dental spas can turn an otherwise anxious experience into a relaxing time.

Thousands of would-be dental patients forego visits to the dentist each year due to an overwhelming fear of the dentist’s chair. Thanks to the emergence of dental spas, however, many of these people are finally able to get themselves in to see a doctor, albeit in a calming environment where they feel relaxed and safe.

As an additional way to calm patient’s anxieties, many dental spas offer pharmaceutical sedation methods not available in other practices. Although they should be used sparingly, these methods are an obvious benefit to anyone who has experienced the terror of sitting through a grueling dental procedure for hours on end with only mild anesthetic.

In addition, dentists report that certain procedures and oral operations can actually be more dangerous on patients who are tensed up, which is why examining patients who are relaxed is actually beneficial for the dentistry professional as well.

Are there are risks to visiting a dental spa?

Although dental spas have many followers, they have many detractors as well. As such, dental spas are not recognized by the American Dental Association—which governs dentistry practices across the country—even though they are recognized by the International Medical Spa Association. A number of licensed dentists have spoken out against dental spas, and worry that patients may be seeking out dental procedures that are unnecessary and potentially harmful.

To combat this, patients interested in visiting a dental spa for the first time would be well advised to seek out information about the specific spa they are visiting beforehand. This includes ensuring that the dental practitioner is licensed, that the spa itself is licensed, and finding out what past patients have to say about the practice. In addition, prospective patients can contact the Better Business Bureau to ensure that no complaints have been filed against the salon before booking their first appointment.

Your skin is one of the first things people notice about you, which is why you shouldn’t leave the care of it up to just anyone.

Finding the right dermatologist involves much more than simply searching for a doctor with a medical license and an open door. After all, skin is the most visible organ on the human body, and you wouldn’t leave the look of your face up to just any doctor, would you?

Finding the right dermatologist involves much more than simply searching for a doctor with a medical license and an open door.

Rather, choosing the right dermatologist to take care of your patient-specific needs and issues—whether they involve simply treating acne or a more serious skin condition—involves a number of different factors and should not be taken lightly. Some things to consider include:

1. Everyone Should See the Dermatologist. Dermatology is not just for teenagers anymore. Because they can spot and diagnose a number of conditions that first surface on the skin—including abnormal birth marks, eczema, shingles, and sun damage—all Americans should make a trip to the dermatologist an annual event. In addition, dermatologists also serve as teachers to many patients, since they know better how to protect the skin, hair, and nails from environmental damage than just about anyone else.

2. Dermatologists Don’t Just Treat Acne. While the facial acne and pimples that plague teens are what today’s dermatologists are best known for treating, the majority of dermatologists actually diagnose and care for a wide array of more complex conditions. From infections to rosacea, dermatologists are trained physicians with knowledge of the entire human body, not just the skin.

Due to the increased incidences of skin cancer in men and women, dermatologists have additionally become a first line of defense in the fight against cancer, thanks to the annual skin cancer screenings and mole removals that all adults are encouraged to have done every year.

3. Dermatologists Can Help Prevent Future Problems. Although much of the field of dermatology involves spotting problems and finding the correct treatment to fix them, today’s dermatologists are actually trained in preventing future medical conditions before they arise, too. Among the topics dermatologists routinely cover with patients include how to prevent hair loss, care for nails—to prevent the common condition of nail fungus—and protect skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Unlike other beauty professionals, dermatologists are medically trained and licensed, which means that the advice they offer can be trusted fully by patients.

4. Not all dermatologists have experience treating all skin conditions. Whether it is acne, skin cancer, a malignant mole, rosacea, or simply an irritating rash, dermatologists are trained to treat a multitude of general skin problems. When your issue is slightly more specialized, however, it pays to find a dermatologist with experience treating the specific condition you are suffering from.

Finding a dermatologist who specializes in treating a certain condition can mean anything from doing a basic web search of physicians in your area to calling your primary care doctor for a referral. No matter how the specialized dermatologist is found, however, you should ask him or her how many times they have seen this skin condition before and what expertise they have in treating it before going in to the appointment, since it may be a waste of everyone’s time to head into a dermatologist’s office only to find out that he or she does not treat this specific problem.

5. Dermatologists are surgeons, too. While the majority of most dermatologists’ day-to-day routine revolves around treating patients with medical conditions, dermatologists are actually considered surgeons, too. That is because many treatments commonly associated with plastic surgeons or day spa technicians can also be performed by dermatologists just as easily. These commonly include Botox injections, lip enhancements, laser techniques, and various forms of liposuction.

Patients can be confident when undergoing the needle or knife at a dermatologist’s office that the treatment is being performed by someone who is skilled in the procedure, since dermatologists are required by law to undergo rigorous medical training prior to entering the practice. And unlike day spas, dermatologists’ offices must be licensed by a number of state agencies to meet a set of minimum safety requirements, ensuring the quality of care and safety of all patients undergoing treatment.

Twenty years ago, having a “mommy makeover” meant a manicure and facial followed by a quick cut and set. Not any more. These days, women with children seeking to pass themselves off as fresh-faced virgins who never changed a diaper in their lives are having a variety of plastic surgery procedures, in a bid to make them look younger, thinner and without any sags or bags.

Take Ellie Malmin, a 45-year-old from Florida who took time off from a busy career to have two children. Pregnancy left the diminutive 5ft 5in makeup artist with 30 extra pounds of post-pregnancy weight, and she felt horrible, fat and downright ugly.

Many mommies go through elaborate makeovers involving a variety of plastic surgeries in a bid to look younger.

“Like many women, I wanted to be the perfect mother and gave virtually all my time and attention to the children,” Ellie told CosmeticSurgery.com. “I got to the point where I had put myself at the bottom of my priorities and even went around without makeup. In a word, I had become a frump.

“If I lose respect for myself, my kids may also lose respect for me and then themselves,” Ellie said to herself in a rare moment of insight. “Perhaps the children would have a better role model if they saw me as more outgoing and confident – and not so frumpy.”

So what did Ellie do? According to the website, she had a tummy tuck, eye bag removal, thigh liposuction, a breast lift and cosmetic dentistry. And now her kids, aged three and seven, see a “more confident, outgoing mother with higher self-esteem.”

If you think your little darlings would love you a lot more if you had higher breasts and a flatter tummy – and what children wouldn’t? – maybe it’s time you spent tens of thousands of dollars on plastic surgery (or get new kids – and a life). After all, if a Mommy Makeover worked for Ellie, maybe it would work for you…

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy makeover is an expensive, painful procedure where women who have given birth to children with their own bodies seek to turn back the clock and make themselves appear younger, thinner and more sleek. The list of procedures available is endless as you can always find a cosmetic surgeon willing to change literally every part of your body – at a cost. Here are just some of the procedures on offer:

Invasive Procedures

Breast Lift. A mastopexy will raise your breasts and take away their droopy appearance. Can be done in conjunction with an augmentation or reduction. Sometimes the nipple may have to be cut away and removed, then placed back. Ouch!

Breast Augmentation. Commonly known as a boob job, but in official parlance goes by the name “augmentation mammoplasty”. Add a bit of silicone inside your chest to make your saggy breasts, ravaged by breastfeeding, look perky and new. Some women opt for bigger boobs to have a more proportional figure, some do it for the opposite reason…

Tummy Tuck. Different types of tucks, or abdominoplasties, are available, depending on how much fat and skin you need removed. Sometimes liposuction is done in conjunction. Best for women who have achieved their ideal weight through dieting and exercise but have excess skin they cannot get rid of as the result of pregnancy.

Thigh Liposuction. Get rid of those deposits of fat that are proving impossible to shift with this vacuum-like device. It really sucks.

Butt Lift. Fat is transferred from other parts of your body into your bottom, to give it shape and make it appear perkier. Buttock implants are also a possibility, where silicone implants are used to fill out your butt cheeks. Cheeky, huh?

Face Lift. Why look old when you don’t have to? Have your face threaded, lifted or even have part of it cut away! Be aware, however, that face lifts may take away the odd wrinkle but cannot give you beautiful skin – unless you had it before the procedure was carried out.

Vaginal Rejuvenation. Get a tighter vagina by having the skin muscles tightened and excess tissue cut away. If you really want to look younger, have a hymenoplasty at the same time, to “repair” your hymen.

Less Invasive Procedures

Chemical Peel. Various acids are used to peel away the top layer of skin, and theoretically to improve the stimulation of more collagen. Can take away age spots and very fine wrinkles and leave you looking younger. Ask to see which one is best for your skin type.

Botox. Whether it’s to smooth away fine lines on the forehead or around the mouth, this toxin works by paralyzing the facial muscles and making you look younger, as if you haven’t a care in the world…

Laser Hair Removal. Getting rid of hair in the bikini region is one way to make yourself look younger – why not go all the way and look pre-pubescent? Some guys like that – but do we like guys who do?

Dermal Fillers. Fill our your lips and plump up your cheeks with injections of Restylane, Juvederm and other cosmetic fillers. Look like Angelina Jolie, if you wish – at least around her mouth!

There’s no reason women shouldn’t be happy with the bodies they have, and feel proud to wear the scars of motherhood. We should revel in our saggy breasts, stretchmarks and big tummies. After all, no pain, no gain – right? And there’s (almost) nothing a bit of dieting and exercise can’t sort out.

If you do decide to have a Mommy Makeover, however, there’s no reason your spouse shouldn’t have a Daddy Makeover at the same time. Just because he didn’t have to give birth doesn’t mean he hasn’t aged. After all, sitting on the couch watching football, drinking beer and scoffing pizza every weekend while you take care of the kids must have taken its toll on the poor fella.

So next time you trot off to the hospital in your Manolo Blahniks for a quick nip and tuck, why not suggest that your man also go under the knife and indulge in a chin implant, hair transplant, pectoral implant and tummy tuck? And why not throw in a nose job – and a penis extension – while he’s at it? Looking good, Daddio!

While massages are generally associated with relaxation, deep tissue massage remains the counterpoint, as therapists throw off the kid’s gloves and work your body like an unmolded slab of dough. Though a small amount of pain or soreness may arise after a session of deep tissue massage, it’s a good way to release tension in the long run.

What is it?

Deep tissue massage is a style of massage that hones in on relieving tension from muscles located under the surface of top muscles.

Deep tissue massage is a style of massage that hones in on relieving tension from muscles located under the surface of top muscles, as well as tension from fascia, or connective body tissue. The massage therapist uses a variety of different techniques (which may involve using their elbows, fingers, or in some cases wooden props) to loosen the hard-to-reach muscles and relieve a great amount of tension, ultimately with the goal of realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue.

When adhesions (bands of rigid tissue) form in muscles, tendons, or ligaments, they can be very painful, limiting movement and blocking circulation. Deep tissue massage counters these adhesions through direct deep pressure applied against the grain of the sore muscles in question. Typically, deep tissue massage is defined by its slow strokes, which is to say it is by no means a quick process. In fact, it is recommended that deep tissue massage be administered on a regular basis to correct long term muscle tension and prevent injury.

Who needs it?

Deep tissue massage is generally suited for a specific problem that the patient is having, such as chronic pain, limited mobility, recovery from an injury, osteoarthritis pain, or muscle spasms. It is also great for stiff necks, lower back tightness, and sore shoulders. In fact, a session can comprise of a therapist working solely on one particular problem area.

It’s a fairly intensive procedure, so don’t go thinking you’ll be sipping on wheat-grass smoothies while wearing neat little robes and slippers. This is not to suggest that a patient has to be in physical pain in order to have a deep tissue massage, as it is beneficial to one’s overall health, especially the limberness of their muscles. It’s just easier to justify the intense, sometimes painful massaging when you have an ailment that needs immediate attention. Those who are involved in heavy physical activity, athletes for one, or those that are in consistent pain will find the most to gain from multiple sessions of deep tissue massage.

Benefits

Although you may experience some discomfort or pain either during or after a deep tissue massage, it is beneficial to your health in the long run. Luckily, any stiffness or soreness that occurs will generally subside in a day or so and then naturally, your body should feel better than ever, considering all the deep-seated tension being released from your core muscles.

In fact, once you’re used to the intensive techniques of deep tissue massage, you’ll most likely find it pleasurable and relaxing. Overall, it’s a very healthy workout for the muscles, as it releases toxins, prevents inflammation, and helps blood and oxygen circulate in more proper fashion.

Risks

Aside from the initial pain or discomfort, there are not too many risks to deep tissue massage, unless your skin is equal to the strength of a plastic bag. That being said, this type of massage is not generally recommended for people immediately after surgery, pregnant women, or on anyone with infectious skin diseases, rashes, open wounds, or abdominal hernia. Also, if you are prone to blood clots, you should ask your primary physician before getting a deep tissue massage because there is a risk of blood clots being dislodged during the session.

Lastly, it is not recommended that you eat a large, hearty meal before an appointment (so if your massage therapist’s office is next to an IHOP, think first). It is also generally wise to stay hydrated, especially after the massage to help eliminate toxins from the body.

So if you were thinking about joining a fight club anytime soon, you may want to hold off. Deep tissue massage may be that visceral experience you’ve been searching for. And lucky for you, it’s healthy, it’s legal, and it doesn’t require meeting up with a bunch of guys in a warehouse basement. At least it shouldn’t.

If a massage is supposed to release tension and soothe, then what is couples massage supposed to offer? Does it mean double the pleasure, knowing that your loved one is mere feet away from you, enjoying a massage of their own? Maybe. Or maybe the two massages cancel each other out, like a math equation of sorts, leaving the couple in question miserable, lying there in their cashmere robes amongst dozens of lit loganberry candles. It’s really up to the couple to make the most out of it.

What is it?

Couples massage can be a relaxing way to enjoy your spouse's company.

Couples massage refers to a massage session in which a couple (this can range from husband and wife to mom and daughter) experience deep-tissue massage by two different therapists simultaneously. The massage can be performed with either a lighter or stronger hand, depending on your preference, and is generally conducted with the couple laying side by side or face to face, on separate massage tables. Couples massage can also be presented with an heir of sensuality (don’t get it twisted, it’s not like on late night Cinemax, it’s still just a massage) or it can easily strip away the façade of romantic pleasure if you’re getting couples massage with a friend or perhaps a business associate.

However, the main selling point of couples massage is that it’s intended to be romantic, as many spas advertising this type of massage also include pictures of dimly lit rooms with flutes of champagne resting on fine oak. In fact, O Spa in Brooklyn offers several different couples spa packages, all of them with the option of paying twenty dollars extra for a bottle of champagne. This of course will leave you wondering if you’re getting a really good deal on expensive champagne or if you’re, more likely, drinking twenty dollar champagne from Duane Reade. It is also unclear as to how easy it is to drink from a champagne glass while lying completely flat on your stomach.

Obviously, the more money you pay, the more “romantic” it will seem. Some of the larger hotel and resort spas offer couples suites, with amenities ranging from steam showers and whirlpools to fireplaces and bubbles. That’s right, bubbles. Along with the pricier spa packages for couples massage are more obscure massage techniques, such as warmed riverbed stone massage, Red Rose Petals Foot Ritual, Mandarin Oriental Signature body scrub, and Oriental Scalp Massage.

Who needs it?

It’s important to remember that these are simply massages, though with the right amount of coin they can easily spiral out of control into weekend getaways with mud-baths and cucumber facials. So if you and your partner are both fairly comfortable with massage therapy, then it might be a nice way to relax together. That being said, it’s not wise to plan a surprise spa weekend getaway for your husband or wife if he or she (or both of you) are new to massage therapy. You may first want to individually get massages to know if you enjoy them enough and are comfortable enough to enjoy them with someone else.

Though the primary reason of massage is to release tension, especially if you’ve been stressed-out or over-worked, couples massage can sometimes backfire if you’re used to being alone during your massages. For instance, you may find that your husband likes to talk nonstop when he’s getting a massage, whereas you like to space out or even read a book during yours.

If you’re looking for a one-time vacation couples massage retreat, then the spa could be very enjoyable and romantic. However, if you’re more intrigued by the feeling of the massage, it may be worth it to take an instructive class on couples massage, instead of dropping double the amount of money for an individual massage every time you want to experience therapeutic massage with your partner at your side.

Benefits

Couples massage can be a very enlightening experience, especially if you can convince a newcomer to try it. While there is a risk that he or she may not like it, it could be a wife’s dream-come-true to convert her begrudging husband into a spa-goer, which in turn, can be a new relaxing hobby for the newcomer. It can do great things for a strained relationship by bringing couples together in close proximities under extremely soothing circumstances. Just make sure your partner’s on the same page before you book your reservations.

Satvik Energy Therapy claims to improve one's energy flow throughout their body.

When this electromagnetic field is blocked, they say, chaos in the body can ensue. This happens when the everyday stress we encounter creates specific “patterns” in our body which obstruct it. People whose basic life force energy is blocked, they maintain, can suffer not only physically, but spiritually and mentally as well.

One way to unblock it, they say, is through Satvik Energy Healing, which aims to concentrate on the causes of illness, not the symptoms. The word Satvik comes from the Sanskrit and means “perfect balance”. Using this therapy will not only unblock the energy flow within the body and let it waft unencumbered, it’s claimed, but will also strengthen the immune system and trigger the body’s natural healing process to work better and maintain the correction in future.

In fact, Satvik Energy Healing is not only worthwhile for people who are feeling a bit off-kilter, but can also be beneficial for those who have suffered an accident, undergone relatively recent surgery or are going through a difficult emotional patch, proponents say. They believe it can also help with certain medical conditions such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, irritable bowl syndrome, arthritis, migraine, asthma and eczema.

Or can it?

Typical Treatment

If you have the chance to actually watch a Satvik Energy Healing session take place, do it. It appears to be perhaps the most bogus, or at least one of the most bogus “therapies” that has come to light in recent years. Saying that, it is not that far removed from its more widely known and infinitely more respected cousin, Reiki.

With Satvik Therapy, a patient will have a brief chat with the therapist and tell him or her all about himself, including a detailed medical history as well as an outline of their current state of mind. Remaining fully clothed at all times, the client will then be asked to stand up, lie down or sit, depending on which part of the body is to be concentrated on at the time.

The therapist will then assess the strength of the energy flowing around the person, as well as the patterns the energy will make. They will encourage the energy to flow better by what appears to be a series of quite humorous hand waving, gesticulation and often quite active arm movement. In theory, while this takes place the patient will feel specific sensations – both warm and cold – meaning that a balance correction is occurring.

“During the treatment clients may have a variety of feelings such as hot or cold, tingling and pulling sensations,” the Inspirational Friends website writes. “This is a sign that an energy release and realignment is taking place.”

Satvik Therapist Training

You may wonder how a Satvik Energy therapist is trained to perform such a remarkable undertaking. Ian Dale, Satvik Energy Sound Healer, explains all on his own website. “The ability to sense and work with energy fields is a natural ability that we all possess. In order to access this ability, Satvik Therapists are taught and commit to doing specific exercises and meditations on a daily basis,” he writes.

“Over a period of time, the therapist ís sensitivity to energy increases and eventually they are able to feel not only their own energy field but those of other people as well.” He recommends that patients who undergo a treatment of four sessions will feel the results for six weeks, during which time repeat treatments are not needed. He adds that animals respond well to Satvik Energy Healing too. “Great success has been achieved with horses, dogs and cats”, he writes, even conditions that failed to respond to conventional treatment. He gives discounts to children and animals.

Therapists are also trained to open their heart centers and allow “love to flow” to enable a “profound energetic exchange to occur between the therapist and the client.”, according to The Satvik Training School in Somerset, UK. Therapists undergoing training are encouraged to release and process their own emotional blockages, and to understand the “silent emotional interaction” that takes place between therapist and client. They are also taught that no two clients are the same, and that no two therapists work in exactly the same way either.

Is It a Scam?

Satvik Energy Healing may or may not work for you, but it is a completely non-invasive type of therapy that cannot harm, as long as it is not done in place of conventional medicine, but alongside it. Whether you will get anything out of it depends on your own constitution, natural level of skepticism and wallet, as well as your state of mind actually receiving the treatment.

There is no doubt that some people will benefit from paying hundreds of dollars to undergo a series of Satvik Energy treatments. Many individuals benefit from different types of caring, loving therapies that concentrate on the individual as a whole, and makes him or her feel special and singled out for positive attention.

“The therapy sessions were comfortable and relaxing and I felt reassured by Sue’s kind and insightful treatment. I felt the therapy has restored much physical and emotional energy and has given me the impetus to begin to care for myself in a positive way,” says patient Cheryl, writing on the satvikenergytherapy.com website.

“Meeting Sally and receiving Satvick [sic] energy treatment from her has changed my whole mental, physical and emotional being. I felt in a safe place within her caring energy treatment. I felt like I’d been wrapped in a cloud, secure and loved. I came away feeling elated and exhilarated from her treatment and highly recommend it to every one,” writes a woman identified only as Maggie.

Who knows – it may work for you! Then again, it may not…

Do you remember the innocent times when body waxing was strictly for women and male strippers? Well, those days are over as men from all across the world are raising the cosmetic bar, removing body hair (which was once considered attractive a la Burt Reynolds) one rip at a time. And we’re not just talking about the chest and back, but the whole package. For skin so smooth, male body waxing could be a bumpy ride for you gents out there.

What is it?

Steve Carrell gettin' his male-body-wax on in the movie 40 Year Old Virgin.

Male body waxing is really no different than standard waxing. The procedure aims to remove unwanted hair by spreading a thin layer of wax onto the desired area and then applying a cloth over the wax which is to be ripped off rather quickly (like a band-aid) against the direction of the hair growth. Ultimately, the wax pulls out the hair (beginning from the roots) as well as dead skin cells. Sugaring is a similar procedure, except sugar paste (generally a mixture of sugar, lemon, and water) is substituted for the wax.

The idea behind waxing is that after repeated sessions, the hair being waxed will gradually thin out because the roots are weakened. This doesn’t mean that the area will be permanently hairless but it will take longer for hair to grow back and the hair that does grow back will generally be less thick than before.

While the back and chest remain the most popular areas for male waxing, more and more men are requesting full bikini waxes, as well as butt (also known as ass) waxing, and in some cases, full body waxing. And have no fear, men who are bashful about going to waxing salons. Now estheticians (professional waxers) make house calls. There’s also the prospect of using do-it-yourself waxing kits, though it may be best to get some professional assistance, especially if you’re going for the whole Brazilian wax deal.

Who needs it?

The only person who really needs male body waxing is Robin Williams (that man acts and looks like an animal). But for the rest of us, it’s purely a matter of personal aesthetics. While the tradition of body waxing has held sway for professional male body builders, swimmers, and cyclists, it’s becoming a more popular trend with men everywhere because some simply feel they look more attractive sans body hair. Some do it for vanity, some do it for their ladies, and still others do it (the bikini wax, that is) because they claim it makes their “junk” look bigger. Ultimately, if you are bothered by your unibrow, hairy back or chest, happy trail, or hairy toes and knuckles, you may want to give body waxing a try.

Benefits

Waxing is widely considered the best long-lasting approach to hair removal. It typically takes 3 to 8 weeks for the hair to grow back, which is significantly longer than the rate at which hair re-grows when shaved or when depilatory creams are used. Moreover, when the hair does grow back it is softer and thinner. This is mostly due to the fact that waxing removes hair from the root whereas shaving and creams eliminate hair from the surface, causing hair to grow back faster and leave stubble or bumps.

Risks

While male body waxing is by no means a life-threatening procedure, there are some downsides that should be mentioned. First of all, it is painful (we’ve all seen The 40-Year Old Virgin) so it’s recommended that you take an Advil before any waxing occurs to combat any pain that you experience during the treatment. It is also recommended that you cease shaving (for at least ten days) in the area you plan to get waxed; failure to do so could cause the procedure to hurt much more than it would with longer hairs.

There’s also some risk involved with the do-it-yourself waxing kits, especially for men considering doing their own bikini wax. Without the proper credentials, waxing of this kind of magnitude can result in bruising, torn blood vessels, and worst of all, you can actually rip your penis. Clearly, nobody wants that. Unfortunately, the alternative is to make an appointment with a licensed esthetician, which is generally pretty expensive. But it’s your call, ripped penis or empty wallet.

It is widely perceived as being relaxing and non-invasive, and can be of help to some people when not used in place of conventional medicine.

Proponents of aromatherapy say it works because it has a profound effect on the central nervous system, and can help the immune system function better and trigger general healing.

Proponents of aromatherapy say it works because it has a profound effect on the central nervous system, and can help the immune system function better and trigger general healing. They say its benefits are manifold: that it can help relieve anxiety and depression, reduce feelings of stress and promote an overall feeling of vitality and well being.

Aromatherapy Explained

The actual term “aromatherapy” came about purely by chance, when French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse burned his hand during an experiment in the 1920’s. He accidentally plunged his hand into a vat of lavender oil, as one does, and – hey, presto! – within a few days it had healed completely, without leaving a scar, any blistering etc. The experience prompted old Rene-Maurice to investigate the use of other essential oils.

Keep in mind that feeling uplifted because the smell of cinnamon buns reminds you of your dear departed mother’s home cooking is not, in the strict sense of the word, aromatherapy. Neither is simply burning – and enjoying the scent of – a perfumed candle. People who practice aromatherapy believe it is an exact science, and that it works only through using precise essential oils, derived from plants, which have a chemical effect on our nervous system, and thus our bodies in general.

Essential oils are volatile liquids, or those which tend to vaporize and evaporate, which are extracted in certain ways from plants. Proponent of aromatherapy believe they have certain almost magical properties. Anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-infectious and anti-bacterial are just some of the qualities believed to be inherent in these special elixirs. Beware of synthetically derived oils, which may smell nice but lack any real content whatsoever.

Aromatherapy Massage

Unlike many other types of massage, aromatherapy massage relies on essential oils blended together to create a relaxing and therapeutic treatment. They are added to the carrier oil or massage lotion, where they are thought to be both breathed in as well as soaked into the skin for beneficial effect.

People have aromatherapy massages for a variety of reasons. As the essential oils used are all thought to have different healing properties, one will be selected especially for you after a brief consultation with the massage therapist.

Some popular essential oils used in aromatherapy massage, and their purported healing properties, are:

Lavender oil: to calm, aid in sleep, balance and relax

Sweet marjoram: Often combined with lavender to relieve pain associated with muscular strains and menstrual cycles

Eucalyptus oil: Powerful antiseptic thought to be effective against certain airborne viruses

Grapefruit oil: This lovely citrus scent uplifts and refreshes

Clary sage: Soothes, relaxes and can help re-balance the hormones

Lemongrass oil: Not just a staple of Thai soup, this oil also calms, relaxes and can be helpful as an astringent – and an insect repellent!

Ylang-ylang. Mainly used to relieve stress but can also be used to help treat sexual dysfunction when mixed with other oils, such as rose and jasmine. Use in moderation of headache and/or nausea can result

Bizarre Aromatherapy Products

Once an alternative therapy has created a following, there will always be some people out there interested in making a quick buck on the back of its popularity – and aromatherapy is no exception. Here are just a few of the “aromatherapy” products on offer today, some helpful and others less so…

Aromatherapy Shampoo. Fragrance-free shampoos allow you to add your own essential oils, whether you need to wake up in the morning or fall into a deep sleep come evening time. Others come ready-blended, such as tea tree oil shampoo, which is useful in keeping lice at bay.

Aromatherapy Money Drawing Watch. Advertized as a way to “attract material wealth”. By adding just two drops of money drawing (frankincense) oil to the back of the watch, you “may” attract monetary gain. “The pad release [sic] a alluring scent which can be rubbed on your wrist to attract attention,” the ad says. No thanks. See www.aromaproducts.com.

Aprodisiac [sic] Oil (roll-on). Claims to be made with a combination of “gemstones, empowered herbs, resins, essential oils and love”. Can help you “recognize the divinity in your beloved through spiritual sexuality. Couples approaching each other in sexual embrace recognizing the God and Goddess in each other and uniting in transcendental bliss.” See www.aromaproducts.com. Or not.

Credit Crunch Crisis Cream. A jojoba-based body cream designed to give back energy to those in need of a quick pick-me-up. See www.meadowsaroma.com.

Aromatherapy Earphones. No, really. This smelly MP3 player wafts odors into your ears as you listen to your fave tunes. See www.gizmodo.com

Smelly Pencils. These Japanese writing instruments come in three scents: Healing, Refresh and Positive. Supposedly the smells have been manufactured by qualified aromatherapists, who claim that anyone within smelling distance will have their learning power enhanced. Yeah, right. See www.pinktentacle.com.

Does Aromatherapy Really Work?

Aromatherapy seemingly works because it is a holistic therapy, which means that a practitioner takes into account not only a person’s medical history but also their emotional feelings, lifestyle and health background overall. They listen to their patients, and make them feel both cared for and as if they have a say in what the treatment will be.

As many ailments aromatherapy seeks to treat are stress-related – backache, depression, anxiety, mild muscular pain – it’s no surprise that people can genuinely notice a positive outcome after experiencing an aromatherapy massage, or relaxing in a bath scented with essential oils. And in some clinical trials, specific essential oils were shown to have effects on health: jasmine, for example, was found to be a powerful aide to sleep. However, always check with a medical professional first as not all oils are suitable for everyone, ie, pregnant women.

In the skeptic’s dictionary, Robert T Carroll writes that he would not reject aromatherapy out of hand. “When I have a cold and a stuffy nose, I’ll use Vicks VapoRub, a mixture of camphor, menthol and eucalyptus oil. Strictly speaking, I suppose I am a practicing aromatherapist.

“However, when I look at what people who call themselves aromatherapists claim, I have to conclude that aromatherapy is a mostly a pseudo-scientific alternative medical therapy. It is a mixture of folklore, trial and error, anecdote, testimonial, New Age spiritualism and fantasy. What aromatherapy lacks is a knack for sniffing out non-sense.” Indeed.
