Inground Pool Or Above Ground Pool?

By Allen Teal | February 23, 2009

As the summer heat beats down, a dip in a cool swimming pool takes up prominent residence in your thoughts. If that pool were in the backyard, the thought could become an instant reality. Having made the decision to have a pool installed, the question of whether to make that an in-ground or above-ground pool is all that remains.

Initially, Above-Ground Pools are Cheaper

While most above-ground pools have an initial cost far less than an in-ground pools, the status associated with an in-ground pool is often worth the investment. Above-ground pools can be purchased before installation at amounts below $1,000. Most in-ground pools start at above $4,000.

Unlike above-ground pools, you cannot cheat by buying a pool now and dressing it up later. You need the concrete or stone work installed with an in-ground pool. You may choose to live with a ladder to let you into the above-ground pool for a season if you must. Because of this, many people opt to bypass the in-ground models.

In-Ground Pools Add Value

When the return on investment is put on the table, the in-ground pool wins the contest easily over above-ground models. To get any type of return from an above-ground pool requires extensive deck building and possibly a little home remodel. Unfortunately, many who get the above-ground pools never complete the landscaping and other amenities that dress up the pool and the yard. This makes an above-ground pool a liability when the home is put on the market.

In-Ground Pools can Cost Less Over Time

By the time the additional work is computed, an in-ground pool is the only really sensible option. The only exception is when the budget only allows for installing a pool that is for getting wet and not for making a statement to the neighbors.

Recommendations for Pool Installations

If you have neighbors, family or friends with pools, you may not need additional guidance to locate a reliable contractor. However, if you are the innovator of your circle, your local pool dealer will generally provide installation services or will be able to direct you to a contractor.

Dress up the Pool Area

For the person who wants to always take the do-it-yourself route, the in-ground pool will often be too much to tackle. Do not let that bother you too much. After the pool is installed, there will be plenty of landscaping and outdoor decorating to make most people feel that their contribution to the project was more than just being the financier.

Neighbors Prefer In-Ground Pools

As long as the in-ground pool installation and surrounding fencing comply with local ordinances, your neighbors can relax about a pool being constructed next door. Unlike an above-ground pool, little chance exists that nearby basements will be flooded from a break in the pool sidewalls or liner. A good fence with a self-closing gate will provide all of the safety necessary to keep small children from accidentally falling into the in-ground pool.
