Consider a Smile Makeover

D. Gordon Rye | November 10, 2009

A great smile can be one of the most influential contributors to making a positive and memorable first impression. Yet, it is also one of the aspects of the average person’s appearance that is most neglected when they seek to improve their look. Rather than making an appointment with a local cosmetic dentist, people often opt for a new hairstyle or a dermatology procedure instead. But, even with a new haircut or fewer wrinkles, something still won’t be quite right.

Cosmetic dentist D. Gordon Rye, D.D.S., of Rye Smiles for Life, located in Fairfax, Virginia, explains that feeling comfortable with your smile leads to higher self-esteem, and more confidence. After meeting with every patient individually, Dr. Rye creates a customized treatment plan to address the problems that are most important to you. This could range from a one-time teeth whitening procedure to a more extensive reconstruction process. Ultimately, Dr. Rye wants everyone who leaves his office to walk out with their head held high. The following are some of his suggestions for achieving a total smile makeover:

  • In-office teeth whitening: Getting a power bleaching treatment at your dentist’s office is a great way to achieve instant results. During the procedure, a rubber protector is put in place to guard your gums while the whitening solution is applied to the teeth. The solution is then activated by a laser which stimulates the release of cleansing oxygen molecules from the solution. The cleansing solution works to penetrate the enamel and bleach away discolorations.
  • At-home teeth whitening: Your dentist can also supply you with an at-home teeth whitening kit, which is still much more powerful than anything you could find at your local drugstore. Prior to starting the bleaching process, you will be fitted for a custom tray that adheres to the contours of your mouth. While at home, you fill the trays with whitening solution and wear them every night until you have achieved your desired level of whiteness. With regular use, at-home bleaching you will eliminate stains and discolorations in about four weeks.
  • Porcelain veneers: By applying ultra-thin shells of porcelain to your teeth, you can change both their color and shape. Typically completed in two visits, veneers are custom-made to fit perfectly over your original teeth. The new veneers are completely natural looking and can be used to place one tooth, a few teeth or a whole row depending on your needs.
  • Laser Gum Recontouring: Using a precise laser, your dentist can easily remove excess gum tissue safely, without harming surrounding tissue. This procedure is particularly helpful if you feel you have short teeth or a “gummy” smile.
